Chapter 6: The Conversation That Couldn’t Wait

After most of the guests had left, Victoria and Alexander sat alone in a small private room at the back of the venue. The wedding cake sat untouched on a table nearby. Lily was with Eleanor in another room, giving them space to talk.

Alexander leaned forward, elbows on his knees, staring at the floor.

“I need you to tell me everything,” he said quietly. “From the beginning.”

Victoria took a shaky breath. She had been dreading this moment for years.

“When I was seventeen, I got pregnant,” she began. “The father was my high school boyfriend. My parents were furious. My father especially. He said it would ruin the family name. My mother… she tried to protect me at first. But when my father found out, things got bad.”

She paused, twisting her hands in her lap.

“He threatened to disown me. He said if I kept the baby, I would never see a cent of the family money. My mother helped me hide the pregnancy. We told everyone I was studying abroad. When Lily was born, my mother took her. She said it was the only way to keep her safe and to protect my future.”

Victoria’s voice cracked.

“I didn’t want to give her up. But I was scared. I was just a kid. My mother promised she would take care of her. A few months later, my father died in what everyone thought was a car accident. My mother told me it wasn’t an accident — that someone had tried to kill him because of debts and secrets he had. She said if anyone found out about Lily, they might come after her too.”

She looked up at Alexander.

“So she faked her own death. She disappeared with Lily. I thought she was really gone. I mourned her. I built my entire life around that lie.”

Alexander was quiet for a long time.

“Why didn’t you ever tell me?” he finally asked.

Victoria wiped her tears.

“Because I was ashamed. And because I was scared you wouldn’t want me if you knew I had given away a child. I thought if I started fresh with you, I could leave all of that behind.”

Alexander ran a hand through his hair.

“This is a lot, Victoria.”

“I know,” she whispered. “If you want to walk away, I understand.”

He looked at her.

“I’m not walking away,” he said. “But I need time to process this. And I need you to be honest with me from now on. No more secrets.”

Victoria nodded, relief flooding through her.

“No more secrets,” she promised.
