Chapter 19: The Secret Behind the Locket

The storm outside began to rise, thunder echoing across the lake as the truth unfolded.

“I found out what you did,” the mother said, her voice steady but heavy. “About your father’s will.”

The groom’s expression darkened. “What about it?”

The bride’s lips trembled. “Don’t—”

“She forged it,” the mother continued. “Changed everything so the entire estate would go to her alone.”

Gasps filled the room.

The groom stared at his bride, disbelief written across his face. “Tell me that’s not true.”

But she couldn’t.

Her silence confirmed everything.

“I confronted her,” the mother went on. “That night. I told her I would expose the truth.”

The bride collapsed into a chair, her face pale as ash.

“And then?” the groom demanded.

The mother’s eyes softened—not with anger, but with sorrow. “She panicked.”

The bride’s voice came out as a whisper. “I didn’t mean to…”

“You pushed me,” her mother said gently. “I fell. Hit my head.”

The room went still.

“I woke up hours later,” she continued. “You were gone. The house was quiet. And I realized… you thought I was dead.”

The little girl clutched the locket tighter.

“I could have come back,” the mother said. “But I wanted to know who you would become… if no one stopped you.”

The bride broke down completely.

“And the locket?” the groom asked.

The mother smiled faintly at the child. “I gave it to her because she’s the only one who listened… the only one who saw me.”
