Chapter 11: The Crucible

The final spring training exercise, known as "The Crucible," was designed to push cadets to their absolute breaking points. Valerie stood in the elevated command center, watching the live feeds from the muddy, rain-soaked obstacle course.
Midshipman Miller was leading Alpha Squad. The simulation abruptly threw a curveball: a simulated casualty in the middle of a heavy firefight zone. Valerie leaned closer to the monitor. This was the exact scenario that used to freeze him.
Instead of hesitating, Miller immediately delegated suppressing fire and ordered a two-man drag to pull the "casualty" to cover. He didn't wait for a perfect solution; he executed the most viable one. Alpha Squad took simulated damage, but the core objective was secured, and the casualty survived.

When the drill concluded, Valerie met the exhausted cadets in the staging area. Miller, covered in mud and gasping for breath, stood at attention. Valerie simply nodded at him. "Good call, Miller. You took the hit and kept moving."
It was a brief exchange, but for both of them, it signaled a profound victory. Valerie had successfully passed the torch of resilience.
