Chapter 18: The Admiral's Ball

The annual Winter Ball at the Naval Academy was a grand affair, held in a sweeping hall overlooking the freezing Severn River. It was a stark contrast to the stifling Arlington Gala Valerie had endured years ago. Here, the air was filled with genuine camaraderie, boisterous laughter, and the shared bond of service.

Valerie stood near the grand staircase, dressed immaculately in her formal Dinner Dress Blue uniform. Her medals gleamed under the warm chandelier light. She felt no anxiety, no need to hide, and no suffocating pressure to conform to someone else's shallow expectations.

Marcus approached, holding two glasses of sparkling cider. He was dressed in a sharp civilian suit, looking healthier and more grounded than he had in years.

"You clean up well, Commander," Marcus teased, handing her a glass.

"You don't look so bad yourself, Marcus," Valerie smiled, taking a sip.

She looked around the room. Admiral Hayes gave her a respectful nod from across the floor. Junior officers she had personally mentored stopped by to shake her hand. There were no hushed whispers, no judgmental stares. She was surrounded by a community that saw her exactly for who she was: a leader, a survivor, and a peer.
