Chapter 5: The Departure

The sharp sound of shattered glass echoed in the dead silence of the ballroom. Admiral Hayes slowly lowered his hand from the salute. He offered Valerie his arm, his expression a fortress of calm amid the room's chaotic tension.

Hayes didn't even look at him. "Your daughter is an American hero, sir," Hayes said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the quiet room. "The only misunderstanding here is your failure to recognize it."

Valerie took the Admiral’s arm. Without a backward glance at her father or Caroline—whose smug expression had melted into pale irrelevance—she walked out of the grand ballroom. The heavy wooden doors closed behind them, shutting out the suffocating judgments of high society and opening to the crisp, breathing air of the night.
