THE FALLING LIGHT / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Falling Light.

The ballroom had been designed to make everyone look important.

Three crystal chandeliers burned above a marble floor polished so brightly that the guests seemed to walk on reflected stars.

Claire Donovan had spent four hours moving between tables with a silver tray balanced on one palm and a practiced smile on her face.

She knew which guests wanted sparkling water without ice, which donors wanted their photographs taken, and which wealthy families expected a server to disappear the moment a glass was filled.

She also knew something was wrong with the center chandelier.

At first, it was only a faint tremor in the crystal drops.

Then came a metallic click from somewhere above the music.

Claire stopped.

Across the room, an elegant silver-haired woman in a dark blue gown was speaking with two board members beneath the chandelier.

A young man in a black tuxedo stood twenty feet away, half turned toward another conversation.

Claire looked up again.

The brass canopy at the ceiling shifted.

One side lowered less than an inch.

Nobody else noticed.

Claire dropped her tray.

Glasses struck the marble and burst into harmless glittering fragments as she ran.

"Get down!"

The older woman turned, startled.

Claire reached her first.

She wrapped one arm around the woman's shoulders and forced both of them toward the floor.

The chandelier came down behind them with a deafening crash.

Crystal scattered across the empty space where the older woman had been standing only a heartbeat earlier.

Guests screamed and backed away.

The orchestra stopped in the middle of a note.

Claire felt a sharp sting along her cheek, followed by a heavy wave of dizziness.

The older woman was shaking, but she was conscious and unhurt.

"Are you all right?" Claire asked.

Before the woman could answer, the young man in the tuxedo pushed through the frozen crowd.

He dropped beside them so quickly that one knee slid across the marble.

"Mom."

The older woman caught his hand.

"I'm fine, Adrian. Help her."

Adrian Whitmore looked at Claire for the first time.

She expected the distant expression she had seen from wealthy guests all evening.

Instead, his face changed completely.

He looked frightened.

Not for himself.

For her.

He carefully supported Claire's head as her vision blurred around the edges.

"Your mother?" Claire whispered.

"She's alive," Adrian said.

His voice broke for half a second before he controlled it.

"She's safe because of you."

Claire tried to smile.

"Good."

She pushed one hand against the floor as if she could stand.

Her arm gave way.

Adrian caught her before her head touched the marble.

"Don't move."

"I'm working," Claire murmured.

"Not anymore."

He slid one arm behind her back and the other beneath her knees.

Claire barely had time to protest before he lifted her.

The entire ballroom seemed to separate around them.

Guests moved aside as Adrian carried her toward the private lounge near the entrance.

His mother followed with one hand pressed to her chest.

"Claire," Adrian said firmly.

Her eyes were already closing.

"Claire, stay with me."

She forced them open.

"How do you know my name?"

For the first time, he looked almost relieved.

"Your badge."

Claire looked down.

The badge was gone.

Adrian glanced back toward the ruined ballroom.

A gold name tag lay near the fallen chandelier.

Beside it was something Claire had not noticed before.

A small steel bolt rested on the marble.

May you like

It was perfectly clean.

And someone in the crowd quietly bent down to pick it up.
