Chapter 14 - The Last Move.

No one allowed Eleanor to return alone.

That was the only point on which everyone agreed.

Police reached the hotel first and cleared the public floors.

Adrian, Claire, Eleanor, and Reed waited in a command room while officers entered through the service corridor.

The ballroom cameras had been disabled again.

Graham clearly knew the building better than anyone wanted to admit.

Then Paige's phone called Reed.

He answered on speaker.

Graham spoke immediately.

"Eleanor comes in, and Paige walks out."

Eleanor's face hardened.

"You have lost your mind, Graham."

A quiet laugh came through the speaker.

"No. I spent twenty years watching your family confuse loyalty with ownership."

Adrian leaned toward the phone.

"This ends now."

"It ended when Claire moved her."

Claire felt every eye turn toward her.

Graham continued.

"One server changed an entire night because she looked up at the wrong second."

Claire answered before anyone could stop her.

"Maybe you were counting on everyone looking down."

Silence.

Then Graham said, "Bring Eleanor."

The call ended.

Police did not intend to follow his instructions.

Instead, they used the service blueprints Mercer had provided.

A narrow lighting-control passage ran behind the ballroom stage.

Reed led officers through it.

Adrian was ordered to stay back.

He lasted thirty seconds before moving.

Claire grabbed his sleeve.

"If you go charging in, you give him another problem to control."

Adrian looked at her.

"Paige is in there."

"Then let the people trained for this do their jobs."

The irony was not lost on either of them.

He had said nearly the same thing to her hours earlier.

Inside the ballroom, Graham stood near the fallen chandelier with a document case at his feet.

Paige sat several yards away, frightened but unharmed.

He was searching through the debris.

Not for a person.

For the inspection tag.

An officer entered from the east doors.

Graham bolted toward the stage corridor.

Reed and two officers appeared from the opposite side.

Graham stopped.

Claire could see everything from the command-room monitor after technicians restored a backup camera.

For one terrible second, Graham looked directly toward the lens.

Then he reached into his coat.

Adrian stiffened.

Graham pulled out a folded paper.

The trust amendment.

He tore it once.

Then again.

Eleanor actually laughed.

Adrian stared at her.

"Mom?"

"The original was filed with the court six years ago."

Claire looked at her in disbelief.

"You let him do all this for a copy?"

"I needed him to believe it mattered."

On the monitor, officers closed the distance.

Graham dropped the torn paper.

The document case was recovered.

Inside was Martin Hale's missing hard drive, the original chandelier inspection tag, and printed messages to Mercer.

Paige was escorted out safely.

Graham was taken away for questioning and later placed under formal investigation.

No dramatic speech followed.

No applause.

Only exhausted silence.

Adrian sat down as if his body had finally remembered it had not slept.

Claire leaned against the wall.

Eleanor looked from one of them to the other.

"There is one more problem."

Adrian groaned.

"Please don't say that."

Eleanor almost smiled.

"Martin Hale is still missing."

May you like

At that exact moment, Claire's phone rang.

This time, Martin was calling from the lobby downstairs.
