Chapter 12 - The Man Behind the Smile.

Only five people knew where the original maintenance binder was stored.
Paige.
Reed.
The chief engineer.
The hotel manager.
And Graham, because foundation representatives were allowed to review event safety records.
Security checked the archive room camera.
At 11:24 a.m., the feed went black for forty-three seconds.
When it returned, nobody was visible.
The pattern was becoming insulting.
Someone kept using the same tricks because they kept working.
Claire looked at Reed.
"What is next to the archive room?"
"A service stairwell."
"And what is above it?"
Reed thought for a moment.
"The mezzanine offices."
Claire stood.
"Graham had an office here during gala week."
They found it empty.
The desk drawers had been cleared.
The wastebasket contained only shredded paper.
But the old office printer still held a job history.
One document had been printed at 11:18 a.m.
BALLROOM MAINTENANCE SIGN-OFF - CENTER FIXTURE.
The user name attached to the print job was VALE-G.
Adrian stared at the screen.
"Finally."
The investigator was more cautious.
"It proves his account printed the form. It does not prove he personally used it."
Adrian nearly exploded.
Claire stepped between him and the desk.
"Then find something only he could know."
Everyone looked at her.
She remembered the voice memo.
The table change.
The center rig.
The gray-suited contractor.
"Mercer was told where to go. Someone gave him timing."
Reed searched outgoing messages from the event office terminal.
Most had been deleted.
Backups remained on the hotel's server.
At 7:49 p.m., a message had been sent to an unregistered number.
CENTER TABLE CONFIRMED. 8:17 WINDOW.
The message came from Graham's temporary office terminal.
The investigator immediately requested subscriber data for the receiving number.
It belonged to Owen Mercer.
That was enough for a warrant request.
Not enough to keep Adrian calm.
Graham had vanished from his apartment and stopped answering his attorney.
His car was found near a private parking structure two blocks away.
Inside the trunk was a spare black wristwatch.
Claire recognized the wide strap from the gala photographs.
The watch itself contained no evidence.
The parking structure camera did.
At 12:03 p.m., Graham entered another vehicle carrying a flat document case.
The vehicle belonged to Whitmore Foundation records storage.
Eleanor stared at the still image.
"He is going after the original trust files."
Adrian immediately called the records facility.
No one answered.
Reed called building security.
Still nothing.
Claire looked at the time.
"How far away?"
"Twenty minutes," Adrian said.
Eleanor stood.
"Then we go now."
Adrian stared at her.
"Absolutely not."
"Those records determine whether Graham can use my proxy."
"And you determine whether Graham has a proxy at all."
Their eyes locked.
Claire quietly picked up her coat.
Adrian turned toward her.
"No."
"You haven't even heard what I'm doing."
"You're coming with us. I can see it on your face."
Claire opened the door.
"Then stop wasting time arguing."
Adrian stared at her for one long second, then handed Claire a spare hotel access card.
"You stay beside Reed."
Claire took it.
"That is not an agreement."
May you like
"I know."
For some reason, that answer calmed him more than another argument would have.
