Chapter 8 - The Envelope in the Coatroom.

Graham left the security office with his attorney before anyone could accuse him of anything.
Adrian wanted to stop him.
The investigator refused.
"Suspicion is not evidence."
Adrian paced the corridor.
"A fake contractor tied to his nephew's company, a staff lanyard from his organization, and a missing watch are not nothing."
"They are also not enough."
Claire sat on a bench outside the office, exhausted but too alert to rest.
Eleanor joined her.
For several minutes, they listened to Adrian argue through the closed door.
"He was always stubborn," Eleanor said.
Claire smiled faintly.
"I noticed."
"His father was worse."
The warmth left Eleanor's face.
Her husband had died six years earlier after a long illness, leaving Adrian to manage the family business before he felt ready.
Graham had helped them through that period.
That was why suspicion hurt more than anger.
"He sat at our kitchen table," Eleanor said.
"He taught Adrian how to read a balance sheet. He spoke at my husband's memorial."
Claire looked toward the closed office door.
"Sometimes the person you trust most knows exactly where you won't look."
Eleanor studied her.
"You learned that young."
It was not a question.
Claire did not answer.
Instead, she stood when the coatroom attendant approached carrying a large cream envelope.
"I found this behind the Whitmore coat rack."
The envelope had no name on the outside.
Inside were copies of foundation invoices.
Each invoice had been marked with yellow tabs.
Several payments went to a consulting company called Northline Advisory.
Claire recognized the name immediately.
"Northline."
Adrian came out of the office.
"What?"
"The fake engineer's company was Northline Systems."
Paige pulled up the vendor record.
The addresses were different.
The phone numbers were different.
But the company logos used the same unusual compass symbol.
The investigator photographed everything.
One invoice included an approval line from Martin Hale.
Another included a digital authorization from Graham Vale.
Eleanor's face went gray.
"Both of them."
Adrian shook his head.
"Or somebody copied Graham's authorization."
Claire looked through the papers.
A handwritten note had been clipped to the last page.
EL - DO NOT ANNOUNCE TONIGHT.
Claire held it up.
"These were meant for your mother."
Eleanor read the note.
"Martin calls me EL. Graham calls me Ellie."
Adrian looked toward the ballroom doors.
"So Martin tried to warn you."
"Then where is he?" Paige asked.
The question hung there.
Claire checked the envelope again.
A thin paper strip remained inside.
It was a baggage claim receipt from the hotel garage.
A locker number had been printed near the bottom.
G-19.
Reed took security to the garage.
They opened locker G-19 with the investigator present.
Inside was Martin Hale's laptop.
The power button did nothing.
A technician removed the battery panel.
The hard drive was missing.
Taped inside the empty compartment was a handwritten message.
It contained only three words.
ASK WHO BENEFITS.
Adrian photographed the message before anyone moved the laptop.
Claire kept thinking about the wording.
Martin had not written ask who did it.
May you like
He had written ask who benefits.
That sounded less like a confession and more like a man begging them to stop following the most obvious suspect.
