Chapter 4 - The Missing Minute.

The police liaison arrived twenty minutes later and asked everyone the same questions twice.

Claire told him exactly what she remembered.

The metallic click.

The shifting canopy.

The gray sleeve.

The dark watch.

The man in the corridor.

She refused to add anything she had not seen.

Adrian noticed that too.

He was used to people filling uncertainty with confidence.

Claire did the opposite.

When she did not know, she said so.

When she knew, she did not back down.

The investigator asked why anyone might want to harm Eleanor Whitmore.

Eleanor answered before Adrian could.

"People don't need a dramatic reason to dislike a wealthy family."

"Mom."

"I'm answering the question."

The investigator looked at Adrian.

"Any business disputes?"

Adrian gave a humorless laugh.

"Do you have the rest of the night?"

The Whitmore family owned hotels, commercial properties, and a charitable foundation large enough to attract both admiration and resentment.

But Eleanor no longer managed day-to-day business.

She chaired the foundation and attended public events.

She was supposed to be the safest person in the family.

Claire thought about where Eleanor had been standing.

"Was that your assigned table?"

Eleanor looked at her.

"What?"

"Under the chandelier. Were you supposed to be standing there?"

Paige answered from across the room.

"Mrs. Whitmore's table was number twelve."

Claire shook her head.

"No. Table twelve was closer to the stage."

Paige checked the seating chart.

Her fingers stopped.

"It was changed."

Adrian stepped closer.

"When?"

"Seven fifty-eight."

"By whom?"

Paige opened the revision history.

The screen displayed her own employee ID.

She stared at it as if someone had struck her.

"I didn't do that."

Reed folded his arms.

"Your login did."

"I was in the east reception hall at 7:58. There were two hundred people around me."

Claire remembered seeing Paige there.

She had been arguing with a florist about missing centerpieces.

"She's telling the truth," Claire said.

Everyone looked at her.

Paige blinked.

"You saw me?"

"Yes."

Adrian studied Claire, then the screen.

"So someone used Paige's credentials."

The investigator asked for a copy of the access logs.

Reed provided them.

At 7:57, Paige's ID had opened the control panel.

At 7:58, her account changed Eleanor's table assignment.

At 8:17, the ballroom camera feed was manually interrupted.

At 8:18, the chandelier fell.

The sequence was too neat to feel accidental anymore.

Eleanor's composure finally cracked.

"Someone moved me underneath it."

Adrian turned toward his mother.

"We're leaving."

"Not yet."

"Mom."

"If I leave before we know what happened, I spend tomorrow wondering who can walk into another room and do the same thing."

Claire watched them argue and felt a colder realization arrive.

"Mrs. Whitmore, who knew where you were going to be tonight?"

Eleanor gave her a tired smile.

"Half the city."

"No. Who knew you were going to make the announcement?"

The smile disappeared.

Adrian looked between them.

"What announcement?"

Eleanor slowly lowered herself into a chair.

"The one I decided not to make after the chandelier fell."

She opened her purse and removed a folded speech.
