Chapter 10 - The Test No One Could Control.

Rachel moved in front of Claire before Charles could say another word.
"Filed where?"
Charles gave her a professional smile.
"Family court."
"On whose behalf?"
"Mrs. Cole."
Adrian stared at his mother.
"You filed something involving my daughters without speaking to me?"
Meredith's expression remained controlled.
"I filed a request for an independent welfare review."
Claire laughed in disbelief.
"You mean you tried to make me look unfit."
"I mean the children's circumstances deserve verification before Adrian makes irreversible decisions."
Rachel held out her hand.
"Give me the filing."
Charles passed her a copy.
Rachel scanned the first page.
Her eyebrows rose.
"This is not a custody petition."
Claire looked at her.
"What is it?"
"A request for temporary appointment of a child advocate and expedited parentage testing."
Charles spread his hands.
"Entirely reasonable."
Rachel looked at him.
"Except you attached misleading financial exhibits and implied my client concealed the children in exchange for money."
Meredith answered.
"The money exists."
"The agreement does not."
The boardroom doors opened behind them.
Twelve directors were already seated.
Adrian walked inside.
"We can settle one part of this today."
Meredith frowned.
"What are you doing?"
"Parentage testing."
Claire turned toward him.
Adrian looked at her, not his mother.
"Only if you agree."
Claire studied him for several seconds.
Then she nodded.
"I agree."
Rachel added immediately.
"Through an independent accredited laboratory chosen jointly by both parents, with results sent to counsel."
Charles's smile faded slightly.
"Fine."
Adrian looked at the board.
"Until then, no one repeats the claim that Claire demanded money from me."
One director shifted uncomfortably.
Meredith sat at the head of the table.
"This is not a family therapy session."
"No," Adrian said.
"It's a governance meeting, which is why I'm going to discuss the unauthorized use of company counsel, company staff, and family-office resources to interfere in my personal life."
Charles's face changed.
Adrian placed copies of the blue ledger on the table.
Then Marcus placed the audio recorder beside them.
Meredith went still.
"Where did you get that?"
Adrian looked directly at her.
"My father."
For the first time, Meredith seemed genuinely shaken.
The board postponed the succession review pending an internal investigation.
Charles was instructed to preserve all records and step away from matters involving Adrian or Claire.
Meredith left without speaking to her son.
The next morning, Adrian, Claire, and the girls met at the independent testing clinic.
Mia watched the technician prepare a cheek swab.
"Does it hurt?"
"Not at all," Adrian said.
Mia pointed at him.
"You first."
Claire almost smiled.
Adrian obeyed.
The girls laughed when the swab tickled his cheek.
For ten minutes, the room felt almost normal.
Then Lily asked the question everyone had avoided.
"Are you our daddy?"
Adrian looked at Claire.
She gave the smallest nod.
He crouched so he was level with the girls.
"I think I am."
Ava frowned.
"You don't know?"
"Grown-ups sometimes lose important information."
Mia looked at Claire.
"Mama finds everything."
Adrian smiled sadly.
"I'm learning that."
Two days later, Rachel called them into her office.
The sealed laboratory report rested on the table.
Claire's hands trembled slightly.
Adrian did not touch the envelope.
"You open it."
Claire did.
Her eyes moved down the page.
Then she closed them.
Adrian's heart pounded.
"Claire?"
She looked at him.
"The probability of paternity is greater than 99.99 percent."
Adrian exhaled like a man surfacing from deep water.
He was their father.
The fact felt enormous and strangely simple at the same time.
Then Rachel's phone buzzed.
She read the message and immediately stopped smiling.
"What?" Claire asked.
Rachel turned the screen toward them.
May you like
Charles Vane had resigned from Cole Holdings that morning.
And according to the building log, he had removed twelve boxes from his private office before dawn.
