Chapter 2 - The Woman Who Vanished.

Adrian declined the call without taking his eyes off Claire.
His mother called again immediately.
He silenced the phone.
"Why are you afraid of her?"
Claire looked toward the dining room, where guests were pretending not to watch.
"Because this is exactly how everything started last time."
Thomas led them through a service corridor into a small private room usually reserved for wine tastings.
The triplets followed Claire in a line, each holding onto the dress of the sister ahead of her.
Adrian watched them with a numbness he could not name.
Thomas closed the door.
"I'll be right outside."
Claire nodded.
The girls climbed onto a low velvet bench.
"Mia, Ava, Lily, stay together for a minute."
Three nearly identical faces turned toward her.
"Okay, Mama."
Adrian looked away for a second because the word landed too hard.
Claire noticed.
"You asked if they're yours."
"Yes."
"They are."
Adrian's breath stopped.
There was no dramatic music, no shout, no crash of glass.
Just three ordinary words that rearranged his life.
"All three?"
Claire gave him a look sharp enough to cut through the stupidity of the question.
"They're identical triplets, Adrian."
"I know what identical means."
"Then don't insult both of us because you're overwhelmed."
He sat across from her.
For the first time in years, Adrian Cole had no prepared response.
Claire folded her arms.
"You really believed I left you?"
"I had a letter in your handwriting."
"I never wrote it."
"It said you were tired of my family and tired of living under their name."
Claire's mouth tightened.
"That part would have been believable."
Adrian flinched.
She continued.
"What else did it say?"
"That you didn't want the wedding."
Claire stared at him.
"I was pregnant."
The words hit him again.
"I found out four days before I disappeared."
Adrian leaned forward.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I tried."
Claire reached into her apron and pulled out an old leather wallet.
Inside was a faded photograph.
It showed Claire outside the Cole family estate, visibly pregnant, standing beside the black iron gate.
A date was printed in the corner.
It was six months after Adrian had been told she had moved to Paris.
"Who took this?"
"Your father's driver."
"Why were you there?"
Claire's laugh contained no humor.
"Because I spent months trying to reach you."
Adrian shook his head.
"I never got a call."
"I know."
"I never got an email."
"I know."
"I never saw this photo."
"I know."
The repetition began to sound like an accusation against someone who was not in the room.
Adrian's phone vibrated again.
Claire stared at it.
"She knows something is wrong."
"My mother doesn't know where I am."
"She always knew where you were."
Adrian started to respond, but Claire interrupted him.
"The morning after I found out I was pregnant, someone came to my apartment with a copy of your signature on a document."
"What document?"
"A settlement agreement."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"I never sent you a settlement agreement."
"I know that now."
Claire's voice lowered.
"But three years ago, it looked real."
One of the girls climbed down from the bench and approached Adrian.
Mia studied the tattoos on his hand.
"Do those wash off?"
For the first time all evening, Adrian nearly smiled.
"No."
Mia considered this seriously.
"Mama says markers wash off if you use soap."
Claire closed her eyes briefly.
The innocence of the moment made the surrounding truth even crueler.
Adrian looked at Claire.
"Who brought you the papers?"
Before she could answer, Thomas knocked once and opened the door.
His face was tense.
"Claire, there's a woman at the front asking for Mr. Cole."
Adrian already knew.
Claire's hand tightened around the photograph.

Thomas looked between them.
"She says she's his mother."
