Chapter 5 - Room 312.

At ten the next morning, Adrian entered the legal-aid office without his driver, assistant, or security detail.
Claire was already there.
The triplets were at preschool.
For the first time, they could speak without three pairs of curious eyes between them.
Claire sat beside a young attorney named Rachel Kim.
A thick file rested on the table.
"I asked Rachel to be here because I don't want another private conversation that can later be rewritten by your family."
Adrian nodded.
"Fair."
Claire looked surprised again.
Three years earlier, Adrian had been more defensive whenever anyone criticized his family.
He was beginning to understand how often that instinct had protected the wrong people.
Rachel opened the file.
"Claire contacted this office when the triplets were six months old."
Adrian looked at Claire.
"Why not sooner?"
"Because before that I was surviving."
Claire did not say it dramatically.
That made the answer heavier.
"The girls were born early."
Adrian's face tightened.
"Were they okay?"
"Eventually."
Claire looked down at her hands.
"Mia spent twelve days in Room 312 because she had trouble feeding."
Adrian closed his eyes for a moment.
Room 312.
A room number now existed in his mind where his daughter had spent the first days of her life without him.
Claire continued.
"I called your office from that hospital room."
"Who answered?"
"Your mother's assistant, Denise."
Adrian knew the name immediately.
Denise Harper had worked for Meredith for nineteen years.
"She told me you had instructed the family office not to accept communication from me."
"I never did that."
"I know."
Rachel slid forward a printed call log.
"Claire documented every attempt after she began suspecting interference."
There were dozens.
Calls.
Certified letters.
Emails.
Two visits to the Cole estate.
One visit to Adrian's office tower.
"Security removed you?"
Claire nodded.
"They were polite."
She gave a bitter smile.
"Your family is very good at being polite while closing doors."
Adrian scanned the dates.
Several corresponded with days Meredith had told him Claire had been spotted overseas.
One date hit him particularly hard.
Claire had stood outside his office building on the same afternoon Meredith told him Claire had become engaged to someone in France.
"There was no man in France," Adrian said.
"There was no France."
Rachel opened another folder.
"We requested hospital administrative records last year."
She placed a visitor log on the table.
Meredith Cole had signed in at 11:42 p.m.
Denise Harper had signed in at 12:03 a.m.
A family attorney named Charles Vane had arrived at 12:40 a.m.
"Why would our lawyer be there?"
Claire's expression turned hard.
"To ask me to sign something."
Adrian looked up.
"What?"
"A statement saying the children had no connection to you."
"Did you sign it?"
"No."
Claire leaned forward.
"That is when your mother stopped pretending she was trying to help."
Adrian felt his jaw tighten.
"What did she say?"
Claire was quiet for several seconds.
"She said your future was bigger than my truth."
The sentence settled over the room.
Rachel pushed one final document across the table.
"There is something else."
It was a copy of the hospital's security request.
Someone had asked that Claire and the infants be moved under restricted visitor status the morning after the birth.
The request had been submitted by Charles Vane.
Adrian stared at the form.
"On whose authority?"
Rachel pointed to a handwritten notation.
The authorization field contained two initials.
M.C.
Meredith Cole.
Adrian stood.
Claire watched him carefully.
"Where are you going?"
"To get the original family-office records."
Rachel frowned.
"Your mother controls that office."
"Not all of it."
Adrian picked up the copy of the forged settlement.
"My father kept personal archives off-site."
Claire's expression changed.
"Your father knew?"
Adrian thought of his father, who had died eighteen months earlier after a short illness.
"I don't know."
Then his phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
DON'T GO TO THE ARCHIVE ALONE.
