Chapter 4 - The Letter That Lied.

Adrian read the signature three times.

The rain tapped steadily against the metal awning above them.

Meredith did not deny it.

That was the first answer.

"You were at the hospital?"

His mother folded her hands in front of her coat.

"For a few minutes."

Claire laughed once.

"Seven hours."

Meredith looked at her sharply.

"You were in no condition to know how long anyone stayed."

Adrian's eyes went cold.

"Do not speak to her like that."

Meredith studied her son as though she had never heard that tone directed at her.

"You don't have all the facts."

"Then start giving them to me."

Meredith glanced at Thomas, the kitchen staff watching through the rear window, and the driver waiting beside her vehicle.

"Not here."

"You had three years to choose a better place."

Claire put the girls into the car Thomas had called.

Before getting in, she looked at Adrian.

"I am not doing this in an alley."

"Where can I see you tomorrow?"

Claire hesitated.

Meredith answered for her.

"There is no reason for that."

Adrian turned slowly.

"You no longer get to decide what there is a reason for."

Claire gave Adrian an address for a small legal-aid office near the river.

"Ten in the morning."

Then she left with the girls.

Adrian watched the car disappear.

Meredith remained silent until the taillights were gone.

"You are making an emotional decision."

"I haven't made any decision."

"You already called them your daughters."

Adrian looked at her.

"You signed a hospital form the night they were born."

Meredith's lips pressed together.

"Because Claire had listed you as an emergency contact."

"Then why wasn't I called?"

"You were negotiating the Armitage acquisition in London."

"I had a phone."

"You were finally rebuilding your life."

Adrian stared at her with disbelief.

"My life had not fallen apart."

"You were humiliated."

"By a forged letter?"

Meredith's face changed.

Barely.

But Adrian saw it.

"So you know about the letter."

"Of course I know about it."

"Did you write it?"

"No."

The answer came cleanly.

Too cleanly.

Adrian returned to his penthouse shortly after midnight.

He opened the locked drawer where he had kept the letter for three years.

The paper had softened along the folds.

He knew every sentence by memory.

Adrian,

I cannot become part of your family without losing myself.

Please do not look for me.

I have chosen a life where your name cannot reach me.

He had hated those lines.

He had also respected them.

That was why he had not searched harder.

Now he examined the handwriting with a different eye.

Claire's handwriting had always leaned slightly forward.

This letter leaned forward too.

Every loop looked right.

Every capital letter looked right.

It was not a crude fake.

It had been made by someone with samples.

Someone close.

Adrian opened an old storage box from their engagement.

Inside were birthday cards, grocery notes, and one ridiculous list Claire had written for a weekend trip.

At the bottom was an envelope from his mother.

Claire had once filled out the address for Meredith because Meredith claimed she had forgotten her reading glasses.

Adrian remembered the moment with sudden clarity.

Meredith had watched Claire write for nearly a minute.

He sat back.

His phone buzzed with an email.

The sender was Claire.

Subject: YOU NEED TO SEE THIS BEFORE TOMORROW.

There was one attachment.

A scanned copy of the settlement agreement Claire had received three years earlier.

Adrian opened it.

His signature appeared at the bottom.

Above it was a clause offering Claire a large payment in exchange for ending all contact.

The document looked authentic.

Except Adrian knew something no one outside his family office should have known.

The signature had been taken from a trust amendment he had signed six days before Claire disappeared.

May you like

Only four people had possessed that document.

One of them was Meredith.
