Chapter 3 - Three Blue Bows.

Claire moved before Adrian could say a word.

She gathered the girls' coats from a chair and began helping them into the sleeves.

"We're leaving through the kitchen."

Adrian stood.

"You don't have to run."

Claire turned on him.

"I ran because I had no choice once."

"Then don't do it now."

"You still don't understand what she can do."

"Then make me understand."

Ava tugged at Claire's apron.

"Mama, are we in trouble?"

Claire immediately softened.

"No, sweetheart."

She crouched.

"We are just going home a different way tonight."

Adrian watched Claire transform around the children.

Her fear did not disappear.

It became organized.

Protective.

Practical.

He remembered that quality from years ago.

Claire had always been the calmest person in a chaotic room.

He had loved her for it.

He hated that she had needed it without him.

Thomas stepped farther inside.

"I can have security keep the front clear."

Claire nodded.

Adrian's phone vibrated again.

This time he answered.

"Mother."

Meredith Cole's voice came smooth and controlled.

"Where are you?"

"At dinner."

"I know that."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"Then why are you asking?"

There was a pause.

"Your driver said you dismissed him."

"I walked in."

"Adrian, don't be difficult."

Claire heard every word.

Her expression told him she had heard that tone before.

"Why are you at the restaurant?" Adrian asked.

Meredith paused again.

"I had dinner nearby."

Claire shook her head silently.

A lie.

Adrian believed her.

"Go home, Mother."

"Who is with you?"

"Good night."

He ended the call.

Claire stared at him.

"She knew exactly where you were."

"My schedule isn't private."

"That was the excuse you gave yourself three years ago too."

The sentence struck cleanly.

Adrian looked away.

"Maybe."

Claire seemed surprised that he admitted it.

They moved through the kitchen, where cooks and servers went quiet as the three girls passed.

At the rear exit, rain streaked the alley.

Claire opened an umbrella.

Adrian removed his suit jacket and held it over the girls while Thomas called a car.

Lily looked up at him.

"Are you Mama's friend?"

Adrian hesitated.

Claire answered first.

"He used to be."

The words hurt more than Adrian expected.

Lily frowned.

"You can be friends again."

Claire gave a tired smile.

"Life is a little more complicated than that."

Mia pointed at Adrian.

"He looks like us."

Silence fell again.

Children could walk directly through every defense adults built.

Claire's eyes met Adrian's.

"They've never seen a picture of you."

That detail made the moment worse.

A black SUV turned into the alley.

Claire stiffened.

Adrian stepped instinctively in front of her and the girls.

The SUV stopped.

The rear door opened.

Meredith Cole emerged beneath a large black umbrella.

She wore a cream coat, pearls, and the same composed expression she had worn at every charity gala and board meeting for twenty years.

Then she saw Claire.

The composure vanished for half a second.

Her gaze dropped to the three girls.

It vanished completely.

"Claire," Meredith said.

Claire's voice was cold.

"You look disappointed to see me alive and well."

Adrian turned toward his mother.

"You knew."

Meredith recovered quickly.

"Adrian, this is not the place."

"You knew she never left the country."

Meredith looked at the triplets again.

Her face tightened.

"Get in my car."

Claire stepped back.

"No."

Meredith's attention shifted to Adrian.

"Those children complicate things."

Adrian's expression went still.

"They are my daughters."

Meredith's answer came too quickly.

"You don't know that."

Claire reached into her wallet again.

This time she removed a folded copy of a hospital form.

She handed it to Adrian.

"She does."

Adrian opened the paper.

At the bottom, beneath the emergency contact section, was a signature.

May you like

Meredith Cole.

Dated the night the triplets were born.
