Chapter 1 - The Twenty-Million-Dollar Ultimatum

The fluorescent lights of the hospital room hummed with a sterile, unforgiving glare.
Clara lay against the stiff pillows, her pale skin practically blending into the white hospital gown.
She was entirely exhausted.
Her blonde hair was tied up in a messy, careless bun, a stark contrast to the perfectly curated life she was supposed to be living.
Just three days ago, she had delivered twins.
They slept soundly in the clear plastic bassinets placed securely beside her bed, their tiny chests rising and falling in perfect unison.
For a brief, fleeting moment, the room was quiet.
Then, the heavy wooden door swung open without a knock.
The silence shattered instantly.
Eleanor, her mother-in-law, marched into the room like a general inspecting a conquered territory.
She wore a sharp black blazer, her blonde hair styled flawlessly, her heavy makeup acting as a mask of pure, cold authority.
Right behind her was Julian, Clara’s husband.
His dark hair was slicked back, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar.
His posture was tense, his jaw clenched, projecting an aggressive energy that made the small room feel suffocating.
Trailing behind them was a woman Clara recognized as the family’s lead corporate attorney, dressed in a sharp dark suit.
A heavy-set security guard in a dark, police-style uniform stood passively by the doorway, crossing his arms and blocking any chance of an exit.
Clara’s maternal instincts flared immediately.
Her fiercely protective eyes locked onto the intruders.
She shifted her aching body, sitting up defensively despite the sharp pain radiating through her abdomen.
Her hand instinctively reached out, gripping the cold plastic edge of the nearest bassinet.
Eleanor stopped at the foot of the bed, her gaze flicking dismissively toward the sleeping newborns before settling on Clara.
“Take the money and give us the babies,” Eleanor said coldly.
Her voice lacked even a trace of human empathy.
Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs, but her expression shifted rapidly from sheer exhaustion to unwavering defiance.
She tightened her grip on the bassinet.
“You arrogant bitch,” Clara gritted through her teeth. “They are not for sale.”
At that moment, the lawyer stepped slightly forward from the background shadows.
She held out a thick manila folder, the bold black letters on the front impossible to miss.
It read: DIVORCE PAPERS - $20 MILLION OFFER.
Julian’s fists clenched tightly at his sides as he stepped closer to the bed, physically looming over Clara.
His face twisted in desperate, barely contained anger.
He wanted compliance, and he was used to getting it.
He pointed a strict, commanding finger right at Clara’s face.
“Sign it now,” Julian demanded firmly.
The security guard watched closely from the door, his eyes scanning the room, but he made absolutely no move to intervene.
Deep, suffocating tension filled the sterile room.
Clara did not flinch.
She did not cry.
Instead, she leaned forward, ignoring the physical agony of her recovery.
Her eyes narrowed into a fierce, calculating glare.
She raised a trembling but resolute finger, pointing it directly back at Julian’s chest.
“Too late,” Clara whispered sharply.
Julian’s aggressive stance faltered for a fraction of a second.
Eleanor’s cold exterior twitched.
“What do you mean, too late?” Julian snapped, his voice losing an ounce of its steady command.
“I mean you underestimated me,” Clara replied, her voice steadying.

She pulled a small, black digital recorder from beneath her hospital blanket, the red recording light blinking steadily.
“The press already has the files, Julian. The offshore accounts, the bribes, the real reason you needed an heir.”
May you like
The lawyer’s professional detachment vanished, her eyes widening in sudden panic.
“You can keep your twenty million,” Clara said, her voice echoing with finality. “Because by tomorrow morning, your empire won't be worth a dime.”
