Chapter 4 - The Underground Escape

The sterile white hallways of the hospital blurred as Clara sat heavily in the wheelchair.

Marcus pushed her steadily toward the restricted service elevator.

He had draped a thick, unassuming gray blanket over Clara’s lap.

She held her newborn twins tightly against her chest, keeping them hidden beneath the soft folds of the fabric.

They were small, warm weights anchoring her to reality amid the absolute chaos.

The elevator doors chimed softly and slid open to reveal a deserted maintenance corridor.

Marcus quickly rolled the wheelchair inside and hit the button for the basement level.

The metal box descended with a slow, agonizing hum.

Clara held her breath, her eyes fixed entirely on the illuminated floor numbers counting down.

"We are almost there," Marcus whispered gently.

"Just stay calm, Clara."

"I am calm," Clara replied, though her trembling hands betrayed her true anxiety.

The elevator jolted to a sudden stop, and the doors opened to the cavernous, dimly lit loading dock.

The air down here was thick with the heavy smell of exhaust and damp concrete.

A nondescript white transport ambulance sat idling quietly near the exit ramp.

A paramedic in a dark uniform stood by the rear doors, checking his watch nervously.

He looked up with relief as Marcus pushed the wheelchair out of the elevator.

"You made good time," the paramedic said quietly.

"Let's get her loaded up right now."

"Is the main route clear?" Marcus asked, scanning the deep shadows of the concrete garage.

"Yes, completely clear," the paramedic confirmed.

"The press is currently swarming the main entrance of the hospital."

"Every single news camera in the city is trying to get a live statement from Julian Vance."

Clara felt a sharp, bitter sense of satisfaction at those words.

Marcus helped Clara stand, supporting her aching weight as she carefully stepped into the back of the ambulance.

She gently placed the sleeping twins into the secured, heavily padded transport bassinets.

Just as Marcus stepped inside to join her, a set of heavy steel fire doors banged open across the dock.

Clara’s heart slammed aggressively against her ribs.

Two massive men in dark suits stepped into the dim light, scanning the area frantically.

Clara instantly recognized them as Julian’s private security fixers.

"Hey!" one of the men shouted, pointing his finger directly at the idling ambulance.

"Stop that vehicle immediately!"

"Go, go, go!" Marcus yelled, slamming the heavy ambulance doors shut and locking them tight from the inside.

The paramedic jumped into the driver's seat and stomped his foot hard on the gas pedal.

The ambulance lurched forward with incredible, throwing speed.

Clara braced herself against the side of the vehicle, hovering fiercely and protectively over her children.

The heavy tires squealed loudly as they took a sharp, dangerous turn up the concrete exit ramp.

Through the small, tinted rear window, Clara watched the two suited men sprinting after them in vain.

They quickly shrank into the dark distance as the ambulance burst out into the bright morning sunlight.

The vehicle merged seamlessly into the heavy, chaotic morning traffic of the bustling city.

Marcus let out a loud, breathless laugh, running a shaking hand through his hair.

"We actually did it," Marcus said, looking at Clara with an expression of pure relief.

Clara looked down at her beautiful babies, her fiercely protective eyes softening for the first time in nine months.

"Yes, we did," Clara whispered into the quiet space of the cabin.

"We are finally free."
