Chapter 3 - The Fallout Begins

The digital clock on the hospital wall ticked past six in the morning.
Clara watched the morning news broadcast on the small television suspended from the ceiling.
The regular programming suddenly cut to an emergency breaking news banner.
The headline flashed in bold red letters across the bottom of the screen.
"Vance Empire Implicated in Massive Global Fraud Scandal."
Clara let out a breath she did not realize she was holding.
She gently reached into the nearest bassinet and stroked her son's tiny, fragile hand.
He stirred slightly, making a soft, peaceful sound.
A quiet knock on the door made Clara’s heart skip a brief beat.
She instinctively stiffened, her protective gaze darting toward the entrance.
The door opened slowly, revealing a tall man in a worn corduroy jacket holding two large coffees.
It was Marcus.
He was her older brother and the only person in the world she truly trusted.
Marcus slipped into the room and locked the heavy door securely behind him.
He walked over to the bed and set the coffees on the rolling tray table.
"The story is everywhere, Clara," Marcus whispered, a proud smile breaking across his tired face.
"The financial networks are already predicting a total stock collapse for Julian's holding company."
Clara offered a weak, exhausted smile in return.
"Did you bring the transport papers?" Clara asked softly.
Marcus nodded, pulling a folded stack of documents from his inside jacket pocket.
"I have the private ambulance waiting in the underground loading dock," Marcus confirmed.
"The hospital administration has already signed off on your early discharge."
"They want to distance themselves from the Vance family just as much as we do."
Clara leaned back against the stiff pillows, closing her eyes for a brief moment of relief.
She knew Julian and Eleanor would not simply surrender.
They were wounded animals right now, which meant they were incredibly dangerous.
But she had stripped them of their most powerful weapon.
She had taken away their pristine public image.
"We need to move quickly," Clara said, opening her eyes with renewed determination.
"Once Julian realizes he cannot stop the press, he will send someone back here for the babies."
Marcus stepped closer, resting a comforting hand on her trembling shoulder.
"I am not letting anyone near you or my niece and nephew," Marcus vowed fiercely.
"We have a safe house prepped just outside of state lines."
"It is completely off the grid."
Clara looked at the two bassinets, her heart swelling with an overwhelming, fierce love.
She carefully swung her legs over the side of the hospital bed.
A sharp jolt of pain radiated through her healing body, but she gritted her teeth and stood up.
"Let's get out of here," Clara ordered quietly.
Marcus immediately began packing the few belongings she had brought to the hospital.
The television behind them continued to broadcast the spectacular downfall of the Vance family.

Clara knew this was only the beginning of a very long war.
But as she gently lifted her daughter into her arms, she knew she had already won the most important battle.
