Chapter 2 - The House of Cards

The small red light on the digital recorder blinked like a warning beacon in the sterile room.
Julian stared at it, his face rapidly draining of color.
His clenched fists relaxed slightly, replaced by a trembling sense of absolute dread.
"You are bluffing," Eleanor sneered, though her cold voice clearly wavered.
She stepped closer to the bed, her commanding demeanor cracking under the sudden pressure.
"I assure you, Eleanor, I have never been more serious," Clara replied smoothly.
Julian lunged forward, reaching out to snatch the plastic device from Clara’s hand.
Before he could cross the distance, Clara simply dropped the recorder into her lap.
"Take it," Clara offered, her exhausted eyes flashing with pure defiance.
"It automatically backs up to a secure cloud server every sixty seconds."
Julian froze in his tracks, hovering awkwardly over the clear plastic bassinets.
The lawyer stepped quickly between Julian and the hospital bed, her professional composure entirely shattered.
"Mr. Vance, if she has leaked the offshore transaction logs, we need to leave immediately," the lawyer urged.
"We have to do severe damage control before the global markets open tomorrow."
Eleanor glared at the lawyer, her perfect makeup suddenly looking like a fragile, crumbling mask.
"Shut up," Eleanor snapped, turning her venomous gaze back to Clara.
"You think a few fabricated documents will actually destroy this family?"
"They aren't fabricated, and you know it," Clara said calmly.
She reached out, gently resting her hand on the edge of her daughter's warm bassinet.
"You thought I was just a naive incubator for your wealthy dynasty."
"But I spent the last nine months reading every single file Julian carelessly left unlocked in the home office."
The heavy-set security guard shifted uncomfortably by the door, clearly sensing the shifting power dynamic.
Julian ran a shaking hand through his slicked-back hair, ruining its perfect style.
"Clara, please, let's just talk about this rationally," Julian pleaded, his tone shifting rapidly from aggressive to desperate.
"There is absolutely nothing left to talk about," Clara stated firmly.
"You wanted to buy my children and throw me away like trash."
"Now, I am keeping my children, and I am throwing you away."
Eleanor grabbed Julian’s arm, her perfectly manicured nails digging deep into his white dress shirt.
"We are leaving," Eleanor ordered sharply.
"This isn't over, Clara."
"Actually, Eleanor, it is," Clara whispered softly.
The lawyer hurried out of the room first, followed closely by a defeated Julian and a seething Eleanor.
The security guard cast one last neutral look at Clara before pulling the heavy wooden door shut behind them.
The hospital room fell silent once again.
Clara let out a long, shaky breath, the adrenaline slowly leaving her aching body.
She picked up her cell phone from the bedside table and dialed a highly encrypted number.

"It's done," Clara said into the receiver, her voice cracking with raw emotion.
"Are the financial files live on the server?"
"Yes, Clara," a warm, reassuring voice replied on the other end of the line.
"The story drops in exactly one hour."
May you like
Clara smiled through her exhausted tears, looking down at her sleeping twins.
They were finally safe.
