Chapter 5 - The Safe House

The ambulance sped down the interstate, leaving the chaotic city behind.

Clara watched the towering urban skyline fade into rolling green hills.

The rhythmic hum of the tires on the asphalt felt strangely soothing.

Marcus sat quietly across from her, constantly checking the rearview mirror.

"No one is following us," Marcus stated firmly.

"Julian is too busy dealing with federal investigators right now."

Clara gently adjusted the soft blankets covering her sleeping twins.

Her physical pain was a dull ache compared to her profound sense of relief.

They drove for three hours deep into the remote countryside.

The smooth paved highway eventually turned into a rugged gravel road.

Tall pine trees formed a dense, protective canopy over the moving vehicle.

The ambulance finally slowed down and pulled up to a secluded wooden cabin.

It was completely hidden from the main road by thick, overgrown foliage.

A woman stood on the wooden front porch waiting for their arrival.

"That is Sarah," Marcus explained quietly.

"She used to work cybersecurity for the military."

"She has swept the entire property for bugs and digital trackers."

The paramedic parked the vehicle and quickly killed the heavy engine.

Marcus helped Clara step down onto the cool, damp earth.

Sarah walked down the wooden steps and offered a warm, reassuring smile.

"Welcome to your new life, Clara," Sarah said kindly.

"You are completely off the grid here."

"There are no cameras, no smart devices, and absolutely no digital footprint."

Clara nodded gratefully, feeling a genuine sense of safety wash over her.

Marcus carefully carried the two bassinets inside the rustic cabin.

A warm fire crackled cheerfully in the heavy stone hearth.

The small space instantly felt like a real home.

Clara sat on the edge of the comfortable bed and looked out the window.

The Vance empire was currently burning to the ground in the city.

But here in the quiet woods, her family was finally secure.

She knew Julian would never stop searching for his lost heirs.
