Security officers separated Daniel from Claire before the confrontation could escalate.
Harold insisted he was merely representing a client and had done nothing illegal.
He carried a court petition claiming Claire lacked the capacity to manage her affairs after her supposed crisis.
The petition requested that Daniel receive temporary authority over her shares.
Claire entered the boardroom in a wheelchair with Ethan and Margaret beside her.
The trustees stared as though someone had walked out of a portrait.
At exactly five o’clock, Harold called the meeting to order and attempted to exclude Claire’s testimony.
Detective Ortiz placed certified copies of the recovered ledger on the table.
Harold dismissed them as stolen business notes lacking context.
Daniel presented edited hospital records suggesting Claire had voluntarily taken medication and disappeared.
The records looked official until a hospital administrator identified an altered timestamp.
Stephen Vale had used Raymond’s access credentials to manufacture the documents.
Harold argued that none of this proved Daniel knew Claire was inside the coffin.
Ethan stood before the trustees, his white funeral shirt wrinkled and his black tie loosened.
He described the knocks, Daniel’s panic, and the eye he saw through the broken lid.
Harold smiled gently in a way that made Ethan feel smaller.
“Children under stress can misunderstand what they see.”
Ethan placed the silver camcorder on the table.
He had recovered its cloud backup through an account Claire created for him.
The footage included a recording from the night before the staged accident.
Daniel stood in Claire’s study and said the closed coffin would prevent questions.
Harold’s voice answered from outside the camera’s view.
“Once the service is complete, the shares move automatically.”
The room went silent.
Harold’s calm expression cracked.
He demanded to know whether the recording had been legally obtained.
Ortiz replied that a court would decide admissibility, but the trustees could decide whether to hand control to the men recorded planning Claire’s disappearance.
The vote failed unanimously.
Foundation counsel froze every account named in the ledger.
Harold rose and walked toward the door.
Federal agents entered before he reached it.
They arrested him on financial and conspiracy charges supported by bank records obtained that afternoon.
Daniel remained seated, staring at Ethan.
“You think this makes you brave?” he asked.
Claire rolled her wheelchair between them.
“No,” she said.
“It proves he already was.”
Agents moved to detain Daniel, but an emergency alarm sounded from the lower floor.
Sprinklers activated, and smoke drifted into the hallway.
In the confusion, Daniel disappeared through a service stairwell.
On Claire’s phone, a message arrived from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of the white coffin inside the evidence warehouse.
Beneath it were six words.
