Chapter 5 - The Empty Hospital Room.
Detective Ortiz called the hospital while racing through afternoon traffic.
The officer outside Claire’s room did not answer.
When they reached the fourth floor, a nurse stood near the open doorway, staring at an empty bed.
The officer had been found unconscious in a supply room and was already receiving care.
Security footage showed a man in medical clothing pushing Claire toward a service elevator.
His face was hidden by a cap, but Raymond’s stolen badge had opened the restricted door.
Ethan stared at the paused image and noticed Claire’s bare left foot extended beyond the blanket.
Her toes pointed toward a yellow maintenance sign beside the elevator.
She had left a clue from a game they played when he was younger.
Whenever they were separated in a crowded place, Claire pointed her shoe toward the direction she had been taken.
Hospital staff said the service elevator descended to the basement loading area.
Ortiz ordered officers to seal every exit.
In the basement, they found an abandoned wheelchair and a trail of torn medical tape leading toward the laundry tunnels.
Claire had been awake enough to mark her route.
Margaret begged to take Ethan home, but he refused.
“She came back for me,” he said.
“I’m not leaving her.”
Ortiz could not bring a child into an active search, so she placed Ethan and Margaret inside the security office.
From there, they watched twelve camera feeds.
One screen flickered each time a delivery truck passed over an underground ramp.
Ethan noticed the same white flower petal appear on three different cameras.
The petals came from the funeral chapel and remained caught in Claire’s hair.
By tracking them, he identified a blind corridor that security believed was sealed.
Ortiz found a hidden access door behind stacked laundry carts.
It opened into an old tunnel connecting the hospital to a neighboring parking structure.
At the far end, officers discovered the empty medical van used in the abduction.
The driver had escaped, but Claire had scratched two letters into dust on the rear window.
BM.
Margaret assumed they meant Bellweather Memorial.
Ethan remembered a different place.
Before Daniel joined the family company, he had owned an abandoned property called Black Maple Lodge.
Claire had once taken Ethan there and warned him never to return alone.
Ortiz radioed the location to state police.
Then she received another message.
Daniel Mercer had been released temporarily after an attorney produced surveillance footage placing him miles from the alleged car accident.
The funeral-home evidence proved serious crimes had occurred, but prosecutors were still untangling who had ordered them.
Daniel had walked out of custody less than ten minutes earlier.
Ethan looked again at the letters on the dusty window.
Below them was a third mark everyone had missed.
It was the small triangle Claire used to represent danger.
Black Maple was not simply where she had been taken.
