Chapter 14 - What Happened to Ethan’s Father.

Ethan had been three years old when his father, Michael Cole, died in what the family believed was a boating accident.
Daniel entered Claire’s life eighteen months later as a helpful company adviser.
The letter revealed that Michael had first discovered irregular payments connected to Harold Wynn.
He planned to report them after returning from a foundation retreat.
His boat was found drifting on the lake, and the investigation concluded that he had fallen overboard during a storm.
Claire accepted the explanation until she found a recent payment to the same mechanic who serviced Michael’s boat.
The payment came from one of Daniel’s false vendors.
She rented the safe deposit box and prepared to take Ethan somewhere secure while reopening the case.
The passports and tickets were not proof of abandonment.
They were an escape plan from Daniel.
Margaret wept because Claire had tried to protect her by sharing nothing.
Ethan felt the floor of his childhood shift beneath him.
Daniel had not simply tried to steal a company.
He had built a new life beside the family whose questions he intended to silence.
Ortiz reopened Michael’s case and located the retired investigator who examined the boat.
He remembered pressure from Harold to close the file quickly.
Stored photographs showed a cut fuel line that had been dismissed as storm damage.
Raymond admitted hearing Daniel boast years later that Michael’s “bad luck” created the opportunity he needed.
The statement was not enough by itself, but it gave investigators a direction.
Victor offered another recording from his private archive.
In it, Daniel accused Harold of becoming weak after “what happened on the lake.”
Federal agents combined the recordings, payments, and mechanic’s testimony into a new warrant.
Daniel responded by sending Claire a live video from the chapel at Bellweather Funeral Home.
He stood beside a replacement white coffin positioned exactly where hers had rested.
Rows of empty chairs stretched behind him in the afternoon light.
“Bring the original ledger and the boy’s memory card,” he said.
“Come without police, or Paul Reeves will finish the service alone.”
The camera turned to show Paul bound to a chair near the preparation-room door.
Claire refused to involve Ethan, but he recognized details in the video that Daniel had overlooked.
The chapel clock showed the wrong time, and the sunlight came from the opposite direction.
The footage was mirrored and prerecorded.
Paul’s chair cast no moving shadow even when clouds crossed the window.
Ortiz called Bellweather and learned Paul was safe at a guarded location.
Daniel wanted them to believe he controlled another hostage while he prepared his true escape.
At the end of the video, a train whistle sounded twice.
Ethan knew there was only one unused funeral chapel beside an active rail line.
It stood in the abandoned town of Ashford, twelve miles north.
Daniel had returned to the image he thought gave him power: a child, a coffin, and a locked room.

This time, however, the room would be waiting for him.
