Chapter 12 - The Second Compartment.

The photograph had been taken after police recovered the ledger, which meant Daniel still had access to someone inside the evidence system.
Sergeant Mason ordered the warehouse locked down and reviewed every entry record.
One evidence technician had left early using a supervisor’s badge.
His real name was not in the personnel database.
Daniel’s network extended farther than anyone expected.
The message suggested the coffin contained another secret.
Technicians examined it again using imaging equipment and discovered a metal strip inside the base.
The strip concealed a second compartment no wider than a hand.
Inside was a small audio recorder wrapped in black cloth.
Claire said she had never seen it.
The recording began during her transport to the funeral home.
Victor and the assistant manager discussed how long the sedative would last.
Then another woman’s voice entered the room and ordered them to reduce the dose because Claire had to remain conscious enough to sign one final transfer.
Margaret recognized the voice.
It belonged to her younger sister, Evelyn Shaw.
Evelyn had sat in the back row of the chapel wearing a black mourning veil and left during the first alarm.
She had spent years resenting Claire’s inheritance and believed Margaret’s husband had favored one branch of the family.
Daniel and Harold used that resentment to recruit her.
The second compartment was not Claire’s hiding place.
Victor had concealed the recorder to protect himself if his employers turned against him.
He offered investigators the encryption key in exchange for consideration.
The complete audio revealed that Evelyn had arranged the private medical contractor and provided access to Claire’s house.
It also mentioned a lakeside property owned under a trust name.
Police traced Daniel’s escape vehicle toward that property.
Claire asked to accompany the search, but Ortiz refused.
Ethan and Margaret remained with her at a protected location while tactical officers surrounded the lake house.
Inside, they found Evelyn alone, seated beside a fire with Daniel’s gray suit jacket hanging over a chair.
She claimed Daniel had left by boat.
Ortiz noticed two wet glasses on the table and mud leading toward a concealed basement door.
Evelyn tried to block the stairs.
Officers moved past her and discovered Stephen Vale destroying documents in a utility sink.
Daniel was not there.
Vale admitted preparing forged papers but insisted Evelyn controlled the plan after Harold lost his nerve.
Evelyn laughed from the top of the stairs.
“They all think they were in control.”
She looked directly into Ortiz’s body camera.
“Ask Claire who first suggested the funeral home.”
At the protected location, Claire watched the live feed and went still.
She remembered recommending Bellweather herself because Paul had been her father’s friend.
Someone had manipulated her choices weeks before the abduction.

The plan had begun long before Daniel supposedly discovered the ledger.
