Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.
The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker,
casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten feast.
Claire Bennett had expected threats when she accepted Helena Vale's invitation to Blackthorne House.
She had not expected Adrian Vale to lift the massive walnut dining table with both hands.
Crystal shattered as the table overturned and skidded across the marble floor.
Silver trays crashed against the wall, and three candle flames vanished beneath spilled wine.
Adrian kicked the fallen table until it slid several more feet toward the fireplace.
His short black hair had fallen across his forehead, and his formal black suit strained across his shoulders.
"You came into my mother's house and accused me of stealing from my own company."
Claire sat frozen in her white button-down shirt while hot wine ran from her sleeve.
Her neatly pinned brown hair had loosened, and one tear escaped before she could stop it.
Across the wreckage, Helena gripped her sparkling necklace with a trembling hand.
The wealthy matriarch's cream lace dress looked almost golden in the candlelight.
"Adrian, enough," Helena whispered.
He ignored her and pointed at the black smartphone beside Claire's plate.
"Delete the audit, sign the statement, and walk away."
Claire picked up a white napkin and carefully wiped her ear and cheek.
Her hand shook once, then became perfectly still.
The frightened young analyst disappeared behind an expression Adrian had never seen before.
"You shouldn't do that."
Her voice was quiet enough to make him lean closer.
Claire unlocked the phone and opened a number saved under a single letter.
Adrian's fury collapsed into panic so quickly that Helena noticed before Claire did.
"Who are you calling?"
Claire pressed the first digit.
"Who are you calling?"
He stepped over broken porcelain and reached for her.
"Put it down!"
Claire did not look at him.
She finished dialing, raised the phone to her ear, and stared through the trembling candlelight.
The line connected after one ring.
"Begin Echo," Claire said.
Adrian stopped so abruptly that a shard of glass snapped beneath his shoe.
Somewhere inside Blackthorne House, steel locks slammed into place.
The security screens along the hallway awakened and began copying eight years of archived footage.
Adrian's own phone vibrated in his pocket.
He pulled it out and read the red notification three times.
The sixty-two-million-dollar sale of Vale Meridian had been suspended by an emergency ownership challenge.
A second message announced that the company's private servers were now under a legal preservation order.
Helena's jeweled hand fell from her throat.
"Thomas called it Echo," she said, staring at Claire.
Claire remembered her grandfather using the word when she was seven years old.
Truth does not disappear, he had told her.
It waits for a room quiet enough to return.
Adrian lunged for the phone, but the voice on the other end stopped him.
It was a woman's voice, weak from years of silence but unmistakably alive.
"Claire," the caller said, "let my brother hear me."
Claire switched on the speaker and placed the phone among the broken plates.
Helena made a terrified sound and backed into her chair.
Adrian stared at the phone as if the dead had just spoken his name.
"Hello, Adrian," Eleanor Vale said.
