Chapter 8 - The Woman by the River.

Rain turned the river road into a mirror of red emergency lights.
Quinn parked beyond the barricade and led Claire down a wooded slope away from Brenner's officers.
The abandoned sedan rested beside the same bridge where Eleanor's car had vanished.
A woman lay across the rear seat while paramedics worked around her.
Claire saw gray hair, her mother's coat, and the familiar silver pin.
Then the woman opened her eyes.
She was Celia Frost, the nurse assigned to Room 614.
"Rook took Eleanor," Celia whispered.
"He made me wear her clothes and injected something into my arm."
Her hands were blue with cold, and a bruised hospital bracelet still carried Eleanor's false name.
Someone had designed the scene so carefully that even Claire doubted her own eyes.
Claire asked where they had gone, but Brenner arrived before Celia could answer.
"Step away from the witness."
Quinn showed his badge and requested an evidence team from the state police.
Brenner ordered two officers to arrest both of them.
Claire's phone rang from inside her pocket.
The blocked screen displayed no number, yet she recognized the pause before the caller spoke.
"Claire, do not trust Helena."
Eleanor sounded exhausted but fully conscious.
"Where are you?"
"Near a train, below something that rings every fifteen minutes."
A heavy bell sounded through the line, followed by the groan of freight cars.
"Mom, stay with me."
"Your grandmother was on the bridge that night."
Claire looked at the black water beneath them.
"She told me she found you eighteen months ago."
"She found me eight years ago."
The call ended with a sharp cry and the scrape of a door.
Brenner seized the phone and pushed Claire against the sedan.
"Convenient timing for a woman accused of fabricating a kidnapping."
Quinn stepped between them.
"The call is traceable evidence."
Brenner smiled and dropped the phone into a roadside puddle.
"Then trace the river."
The black case remained lit beneath the water.
Claire activated Echo's emergency upload by pressing the side button with her shoe.
Every second of Brenner's conduct began streaming to Mara.
Celia raised one trembling hand from the stretcher.
"I recorded them."
She had hidden a memory card inside the lining of Eleanor's coat.
The footage showed Rook forcing both women into the sedan at St. Agnes.
It also showed Brenner meeting him at the bridge less than twenty minutes earlier.
The surrounding officers watched the clip on Quinn's phone and stopped following Brenner's commands.
Brenner backed toward his car.
"This department will remember who disobeyed me."
Quinn arrested him for evidence tampering, but Jonah's black SUV struck the barricade before the cuffs closed.
In the confusion, Brenner escaped with one of the patrol cars.
Claire recovered her phone and traced Eleanor's clue.
Only one active freight line passed beneath a fifteen-minute bell.
It ran below St. Matthew's Church and continued toward Vale Meridian's old cold-storage depot.
Before they left, Quinn received restored footage from the bridge camera that had supposedly failed eight years earlier.
The grainy image showed Helena pulling Eleanor from the wreckage.
Then Helena handed her wounded daughter to a younger Miles Rook and watched him drive away.
Claire stared at the woman who had called tonight's trap an act of protection.
The final frame showed Helena turning toward the camera.

She knew it had recorded everything.
