Chapter 12 - The House of Glass.

Fire climbed the velvet curtains and spread across the carved ceiling faster than any accident could allow.

Elias opened the terrace doors while Claire and Eleanor guided panicked guests through the smoke.

The mansion's alarm panel remained dark because Jonah had disabled it before the meeting.

Quinn used a serving tray to break the emergency cabinet and trigger the manual siren.

Outside, rain struck the glass conservatory and turned the garden paths silver.

Claire saw Adrian crossing the conservatory with her phone in one hand and the metal drive in the other.

He had torn both from the laptop before lighting the curtain.

"Stay with Mom," Claire told Helena.

"I have already abandoned her enough," Helena replied.

The older woman followed Claire into the glass corridor despite the paramedic calling her back.

Adrian reached the conservatory's far door, but Elias remotely locked the exterior gates.

He turned and held up the black phone.

"One device started this, and one device can end it."

Claire knew Echo stored copies beyond the phone, but Adrian did not know how much had uploaded.

"Destroying evidence will not restore your company."

"It is still my company until a court says otherwise."

Mara entered from the garden with her hands raised.

Police Chief Brenner stood behind her and pressed a weapon against her back.

He had escaped the bridge in Jonah's SUV and entered through the old chapel tunnel.

"Tell your detective to lower his gun," Brenner said.

Quinn appeared near the fountain and obeyed when Mara nodded.

Brenner took his weapon, kicked it beneath a bench, and ordered everyone inside the conservatory.

Adrian looked almost relieved.

"I wondered when you would remember who paid for your badge."

Brenner demanded the ledger drive as the price for a helicopter and a clean route out of the county.

Adrian refused.

"I own the evidence, so I own the negotiation."

The two men who had protected each other for years began turning on each other within seconds.

Claire quietly retrieved her phone's paired earpiece from her pocket.

The device still carried live audio, which meant Echo had not stopped transmitting.

She needed Adrian and Brenner to keep talking.

"Which one of you ordered my mother's car off the bridge?"

Brenner pointed at Adrian.

"He chased her."

Adrian pointed at Helena.

"She told me to bring Eleanor home before she embarrassed the family."

Helena closed her eyes.

"I told you to talk to her."

"You knew what I was."

The fire reached the adjoining ballroom, and a skylight shattered from the heat.

Brenner forced Mara toward the garden door while Adrian pulled Helena against him.

"Call the pilot," he ordered Claire.

Claire raised the earpiece instead.

"The call never ended."

Adrian looked at the black phone and saw the red Echo symbol pulsing on its screen.

Every confession had reached the federal preservation server.

Brenner struck the phone from Adrian's hand, but Helena caught it before it hit the stone floor.

She dialed a memorized number and placed the call on speaker.

"United States Attorney's Office," a voice answered.

Helena stared at her son as rain and fire reflected across the glass walls.

"My name is Helena Vale, and I am ready to confess."

Adrian dragged her through the service door before anyone could stop him.
