Chapter 10 - The Ledger Behind the Wedding.
.The wedding reception did not end with music.
It ended with guests leaving in careful silence while staff cleared untouched desserts from the tables.
Claire and Daniel went upstairs to a private suite instead of leaving for the planned hotel send-off.
Maya changed out of her emerald gown and sat alone in a small conference room beside the ballroom.
Her hands would not stop shaking.
Dr. Calder found her there.
“You were brave tonight,” Evelyn said.
Maya stared at the carpet.
“I feel terrible.”
“Those things can exist together.”
“I ruined my sister’s wedding.”
“No.”
Evelyn sat across from her.
“Your father created a situation in which the truth became inconvenient.”
Maya looked up.
“That does not make the truth responsible.”
Before Maya could answer, Samuel Reed entered carrying a leather folder.
“I’m sorry to interrupt.”
Maya stood.
“How did you get here?”
“Claire called me.”
Maya stared at him.
“She had my number from your message screen.”
Samuel placed the folder on the table.
“She asked for an explanation.”
“Did you give her one?”
“Only what I am allowed to discuss.”
Maya looked toward the door.
“Where is she?”
“She is coming.”
A minute later, Claire entered with Daniel.
Her tiara was gone.
Her veil was gone.
Without them, she looked less like a bride and more like Maya’s exhausted older sister.
“I need to know everything,” Claire said.
Maya nodded.
Samuel opened the folder.
He showed them the trust document first.
Then the transfers.
Then the event deposit.
Claire covered her mouth.
“That amount is almost exactly what Dad said the ballroom cost.”
Daniel leaned over the records.
“There are other transfers.”
Samuel nodded.
“Yes.”
One had gone to Bennett Family Holdings eighteen months earlier.
Another had gone to a personal credit line.
A third matched a payment Thomas made toward the lake house renovation he claimed he had postponed.
Claire stared at the pages.
“He lied about that too.”
Maya felt sick.
Samuel turned another page.
“This is what concerns me most.”
It was an internal ledger from Bennett Family Holdings.
Maya recognized the wedding deposit.
But next to it was a notation.
TEMPORARY DRAW — REPLACE AFTER CROSS MERGER.
Daniel stiffened.
“What merger?”
Claire looked at him.
Daniel’s family owned Cross Medical Supply.
His father had discussed a possible partnership with Bennett Family Holdings but had never mentioned a merger.
Samuel looked uncomfortable.
“I cannot answer that.”
Daniel read further down the page.
Another line contained his father’s company name.
Another contained a projected acquisition figure.
Claire sat down slowly.
“My wedding was part of a business deal.”
Maya looked at her.
“What?”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“Dad kept insisting on inviting hospital executives and investors I barely knew.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“He told my father tonight would be a good environment to discuss strategic alignment.”
Maya felt the shape of the truth expanding.
Thomas had not simply used her trust to fund a wedding.
He had used Claire’s wedding to build a business opportunity.
Then Daniel turned to the last page.
His face changed.
“There’s a signature here.”
Claire leaned closer.
The document appeared to authorize preliminary negotiations on behalf of Cross Medical Supply.
The signature belonged to Daniel’s father.
