Chapter 11 - The Signature That Should Not Exist.

.Daniel stared at the document until his hands began to tremble.

“That is not my father’s signature.”

Claire leaned closer.

“Are you sure?”

“I have seen him sign contracts since I was a teenager.”

Daniel pointed at the final letter in the surname.

“He never loops the S like that.”

Samuel Reed immediately closed the folder halfway.

“If you believe the document is not authentic, do not make accusations in this room.”

Maya looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because from this point forward, facts matter more than anger.”

Dr. Calder nodded.

“He is right.”

Claire sank into a chair.

“What do we do?”

Daniel pulled out his phone.

“I call my father.”

Samuel stopped him.

“Ask him only whether he signed a preliminary merger authorization with Bennett Family Holdings.”

Daniel made the call on speaker.

His father answered on the third ring.

“Daniel, is everything all right?”

“No.”

Daniel glanced at Claire.

“Dad, did you sign any merger authorization with Thomas Bennett?”

There was a long silence.

“No.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Did you authorize him to negotiate on your behalf?”

“Absolutely not.”

“Did he show you a document tonight?”

Another pause.

“He showed me a proposal at cocktail hour.”

Daniel looked at Samuel.

“What kind of proposal?”

“A partnership pitch.”

Daniel’s father sounded confused.

“He said the Bennett family had recently strengthened its liquidity and was prepared to invest.”

Maya stared at the trust ledger.

Strengthened its liquidity.

Thomas had apparently been presenting money transferred from Maya’s trust as if it belonged to his company.

Daniel ended the call after asking his father not to discuss anything further with Thomas.

Claire looked physically ill.

“My wedding was a sales presentation.”

Daniel crouched beside her.

“Our wedding was real.”

He squeezed her hand.

“His motives do not get to define ours.”

Maya wished someone had told her that years ago about her own achievements.

Thomas’s motives did not define her degree.

His money did not define her intelligence.

His approval did not define her worth.

The conference-room door suddenly opened.

Thomas stood there.

His tuxedo jacket was unbuttoned now, and the polished calm had vanished.

“Everyone out except my daughters.”

Nobody moved.

Thomas looked at Samuel.

“You had no right to come here.”

Samuel’s expression remained neutral.

“Claire invited me.”

Thomas turned to Daniel.

“This is a Bennett family matter.”

Daniel stood.

“You made Cross Medical Supply part of it.”

Thomas’s eyes flickered.

For half a second, Maya saw panic.

Then the mask returned.

“You are looking at incomplete records and making reckless assumptions.”

Maya stood.

“Then give us the complete records.”

Thomas ignored her.

He looked at Claire instead.

“Come with me.”

Claire did not move.

“Why?”

“Because your sister is destroying this family.”

Maya felt the old pain rise.

There it was again.

Not his transfer.

Not his threats.

Not the questionable signature.

Maya was the problem because Maya had looked.

Claire slowly stood.

“No, Dad.”

Thomas blinked.

Claire’s voice shook, but she kept speaking.

“The family is not being destroyed because Maya found the records.”

“It is being destroyed because you expected us never to read them.”

Thomas’s expression hardened.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed for both of you.”

Claire looked at her wedding dress.

“Then show us.”

She pointed toward the folder.

“Show us everything.”

Thomas said nothing.

Samuel broke the silence.

“There will be a formal accounting now.”

Thomas turned toward him.

“Over my objection?”

Samuel met his eyes.

“The court has already frozen the trust.”

Thomas’s face went white.

Maya watched him carefully.

His reaction was too strong for one frozen account.

Samuel noticed too.

“What else is tied to that money, Thomas?”

Thomas looked at the folder.

May you like

Then he looked at the locked ballroom doors behind them.

And for the first time that evening, he did not have an answer ready.
