Chapter 14 - The Bride Takes the Microphone Back.
.Thomas expected Maya to be the daughter who finally walked away.
He did not expect Claire to go with her.
Three days after the accounting meeting, Claire returned to the Grand Aurelia Ballroom.
The venue manager had asked her to collect several boxes left after the wedding.
Maya came to help.
The stage was still there because another reception was scheduled that weekend.
For a few minutes, the sisters worked silently.
Claire folded a table card between her fingers.
“I owe you an apology.”
Maya looked up.
“You did not know about the trust.”
“Not for that.”
Claire sat on the edge of the stage.
“For believing Dad every time he said you were jealous of me.”
Maya did not answer immediately.
Claire looked down.
“I liked being the easy daughter.”
“That does not make you a bad person.”
“It made it convenient not to ask why you were always the difficult one.”
Maya sat beside her.
“Dad trained both of us.”
Claire nodded.
“He rewarded me for agreeing with him.”
“And punished me for not agreeing.”
Claire gave a sad smile.
“Same system.”
“Different roles.”
For the first time, neither sister was competing over who had suffered more.
They were simply naming what happened.
Claire reached into one of the boxes and pulled out the black microphone Maya had used during the toast.
The venue staff had accidentally packed it with the wedding decorations.
Claire held it out.
“Want it?”
Maya laughed.
“Absolutely not.”
Claire smiled for the first time that day.
Then Thomas’s voice came from behind them.
“I was told you were here.”
Both women turned.
Thomas stood near the ballroom entrance.
He looked older than he had two weeks earlier.
His attorneys had advised him to stop contacting Maya directly.
Apparently, he had ignored them.
Claire stood.
“What do you want?”
“To talk to my daughters without lawyers turning every sentence into evidence.”
Maya remained seated.
“Then do not say things you are afraid to have repeated.”
Thomas flinched.
Claire held the microphone loosely at her side.
Thomas looked at it and seemed to recognize the irony.
“I made mistakes,” he said.
Maya waited.
It was the closest he had ever come to admitting fault.
Then he continued.
“But everything I did was to protect this family.”
Claire’s expression changed.
There it was again.
The apology that became a defense before it was finished.
Thomas looked at Maya.
“You were stubborn.”
“You forced me into impossible positions.”
Maya stood.
“I was a student choosing my own major.”
“You defied me constantly.”
Claire stepped between them.
“No.”
Thomas looked at her.
Claire raised the microphone.
She did not switch it on.
She did not need to.
“She grew up.”
Thomas stared at her.
Claire continued.
“You keep calling adulthood defiance because it means we can tell you no.”
Thomas’s face hardened.
“After everything I gave you?”
Claire looked around the empty ballroom.
“You gave me a wedding I did not ask for using money that was not yours.”
Thomas went silent.
Claire’s voice became steadier.
“And you gave Maya fear every time she tried to make a decision without you.”
Thomas turned toward Maya.
“She has poisoned you against me.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
“She finally stopped protecting me from the truth.”
Thomas looked from one daughter to the other.
For the first time, there was no favored daughter standing beside him.
There was no difficult daughter standing alone.
There were simply two adults who no longer accepted his version of them.
Thomas walked out without another word.
Claire watched the doors close.
Then she looked at Maya.
“What happens now?”
Maya took the microphone from her hand and placed it on the stage.
“Now we stop living like every conversation needs his permission.”
Outside the ballroom, Maya’s phone vibrated.
Samuel had sent the settlement proposal.
The first line was simple.
Thomas Bennett agrees to restore all improperly transferred trust funds.
