Chapter 5 - The Money That Vanished.
.Maya met trust attorney Samuel Reed in a quiet coffee shop four days before Claire’s wedding.
He was in his sixties, with careful eyes and the habit of reading every page twice before speaking.
“Your grandmother established the education trust when you were six,” he said.
Maya frowned.
“My father said he created the college fund.”
“He administered it after your grandmother died.”
“That is not the same thing.”
“No.”
Samuel slid a document across the table.
Maya recognized her grandmother’s signature at the bottom.
“She left enough to cover four years of tuition, housing, and basic academic expenses at a private university.”
Maya stared at the number.
It was far larger than anything Thomas had ever admitted existed.
“This can’t be right.”
“It is.”
“I worked three jobs.”
Samuel’s expression tightened.
“I know.”
Maya looked at the transaction summary.
There were payments to Northridge University during her first year.
Then smaller payments.
Then long gaps.
Between those gaps were transfers to a company called Bennett Family Holdings.
“That’s my father’s company.”
“Yes.”
Maya felt cold.
“Did he steal from me?”
Samuel chose his words carefully.
“I am saying the trust records raise serious questions about whether all withdrawals complied with the trust terms.”
Maya turned another page.
One transfer was dated six months earlier.
The amount was enormous.
The memo read EVENT DEPOSIT.
She looked up.
“Claire’s wedding.”
Samuel did not answer immediately.
“The Grand Aurelia deposit was made the same week.”
Maya pushed the paper away.
For years, Thomas had threatened to withdraw money that had never been his.
Worse, he had used part of Maya’s education trust to pay for the wedding where he now expected her to smile politely.
“Does Claire know?”
“I have no reason to think she does.”
Maya closed her eyes.
Anger came first.
Then shame.
Then something more complicated.
She loved Claire.
She also resented how easily Claire had accepted every advantage their father offered.
But this was different.
If Claire did not know, then Thomas had used both daughters in different ways.
“What happens now?” Maya asked.
Samuel folded his hands.
“You can request a formal accounting.”
“Before the wedding?”
“Yes.”
Maya imagined Thomas receiving legal papers during rehearsal dinner.
She imagined Claire crying in her wedding dress.
“No.”
Samuel looked surprised.
“I’ll wait until after the wedding.”
“You are not obligated to protect anyone from the consequences of these records.”
“I’m protecting Claire’s wedding day, not my father.”
Samuel nodded slowly.
Then he placed one final paper in front of her.
“There is one issue with waiting.”
Maya read the heading.
PENDING TRUST TERMINATION REQUEST.
Her pulse quickened.
“What is this?”
“Your father filed to close the trust and transfer the remaining balance.”
“To where?”
Samuel pointed to the account name.
Bennett Family Holdings.
Maya stared at it.
“When does it happen?”
“Monday.”
The wedding was Saturday.
Thomas had threatened her with college money for years.
Now Maya finally understood why.
