Chapter 8 - The Father Who Changed the Story.

.Thomas recovered quickly.

He had spent decades building a reputation as a successful, generous father and businessman.

One uncomfortable moment at a wedding was not enough to make him surrender that image.

He gave Dr. Calder a polite smile.

“I am proud of Maya’s success.”

Maya stared at him.

Thirty seconds earlier, he had mocked her job.

Now his voice carried warmth.

“I simply wish she had trusted her family enough to share it with us.”

Several guests nodded cautiously.

Maya understood what he was doing.

He was rewriting the scene while everyone was still standing inside it.

Thomas turned toward her.

“We have supported you every step of the way.”

Maya’s throat tightened.

“You withheld tuition when I refused to change my major.”

“That was a misunderstanding.”

“You told me to unenroll.”

“I challenged you to become responsible.”

“You threatened to take away college money five minutes ago.”

Thomas smiled sadly at the crowd.

“Parents sometimes say things in emotional moments.”

Maya looked around the ballroom.

There it was.

The trick that had worked her entire childhood.

Thomas would do something hurtful.

Maya would react.

Then Thomas would calmly explain why her reaction was the real problem.

He lowered his voice.

“Put down the microphone, sweetheart.”

Maya’s skin crawled at the word sweetheart.

Claire finally moved.

“Dad, stop.”

Thomas turned.

“This does not concern you.”

“It is my wedding.”

His expression hardened for half a second.

Then he smiled again.

“Exactly, Claire.”

“I am trying to protect your wedding.”

Daniel stood beside her.

“By threatening Maya?”

Thomas ignored him.

Instead, he looked at Dr. Calder.

“I apologize that you had to witness this.”

Evelyn did not smile.

“Do not apologize to me.”

Thomas’s jaw tightened.

Then Claire looked at Maya.

“What did Dad mean when he said he paid for everything?”

Maya went still.

Thomas answered immediately.

“He meant exactly what he said.”

Claire frowned.

“Did you use Maya’s college money for this wedding?”

The question struck the room like a dropped tray.

Thomas’s face changed.

Maya had not told Claire.

Claire had arrived at the possibility on her own.

“Of course not,” Thomas said.

Maya lowered the microphone.

She no longer wanted the whole room involved.

But Thomas pointed at her.

“Is that what she told you?”

Claire’s eyes moved between them.

“Maya?”

Maya swallowed.

“I learned four days ago that Grandma created my education trust.”

Thomas’s voice sharpened.

“This is not the place.”

Maya continued.

“I also learned money was transferred from that trust to Bennett Family Holdings.”

Thomas stepped closer.

“Stop.”

“One transfer was labeled event deposit.”

Claire’s face drained of color.

Daniel whispered her name.

Thomas raised his voice.

“She does not understand the account.”

Maya stared at him.

“Then explain it.”

Thomas said nothing.

“Explain why my education trust paid your company during months when you told me there was no money for tuition.”

Thomas looked at the guests, then at Claire, then back at Maya.

Finally, his polished expression cracked.

“You ungrateful child.”

Maya felt the insult.

But Claire reacted first.

She slowly removed her crystal tiara.

May you like

“Dad,” she said.

“Did my wedding come out of Maya’s trust?”
