Chapter 6 - The Speech She Was Never Supposed to Give.
.On Saturday evening, Maya entered the Grand Aurelia Ballroom determined to keep one promise.
She would not ruin Claire’s wedding.
She had filed an emergency objection through Samuel Reed that morning, freezing the trust transfer until a formal accounting could occur.
Thomas did not know yet.
Samuel believed notice would reach him Monday.
Maya planned to let Claire have one peaceful night before everything changed.
For the first two hours, she almost succeeded.
She smiled for photographs.
She fixed the train of Claire’s gown before the ceremony.
She hugged Daniel and told him to take care of her sister.
She even danced once with Thomas when the photographer insisted on a father-daughter picture.
Thomas kept one hand on her shoulder and spoke through a polished smile.
“You nearly missed the rehearsal.”
“I arrived before it started.”
“You looked tired.”
“I had work.”
“Your little campus job?”
Maya looked at him.
“Something like that.”
He smiled for the camera.
“You should learn when to stop being difficult.”
Maya stepped away as soon as the flash ended.
At dinner, Claire’s maid of honor gave a funny speech about high school.
Daniel’s brother told a story that made half the room laugh.
Then the emcee announced Maya’s name.
She had not asked to speak.
Claire had added her to the program.
Maya walked to the stage with the black microphone in her hand and looked at her sister.
For a moment, all the resentment disappeared.
She remembered Claire teaching her how to braid hair when they were children.
She remembered hiding together under a table during thunderstorms.
She remembered the sister who existed before Thomas taught them to compete for approval.
“Claire,” Maya began.
“You have always been braver than you think.”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“You spent years trying to keep peace in a family where peace often meant saying yes.”
Thomas’s head snapped toward the stage.
Maya saw it.
She should have stopped.
Instead, she continued gently.
“I hope marriage gives you something every person deserves.”
“The freedom to choose your own future without being afraid that love will disappear if you choose differently.”
The ballroom became very quiet.
Claire looked stunned.
Daniel reached for her hand.
Thomas rose from his seat.
“Maya.”
She lowered the microphone.
“I’m talking to Claire.”
Thomas walked toward the stage.
“You are done.”
Maya’s pulse began racing.
The old instinct returned.
Obey before he gets angrier.
Apologize before people notice.
Make yourself smaller so everyone else stays comfortable.
Thomas climbed the first step.
“Give me the microphone.”
Maya looked at Claire.
Her sister’s lips parted.
No words came out.
Thomas reached the stage.
“You have embarrassed this family enough.”
Maya’s eyes burned.
“I said nothing untrue.”
“You want independence so badly?”
His voice rose.
“Fine.”
He faced her in front of hundreds of guests.
“And your college money is gone.”
The words landed exactly as they had so many times before.
But this time, Maya knew what he did not.
She knew the account was frozen.
She knew the money had never belonged to him.
And she knew she no longer needed it.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
Thomas saw weakness.
