Chapter 11 - The Blueprint of Home

For her final project presentation, Mariana had to present a 3D model of her community center to a panel of professors. She had spent weeks meticulously crafting it out of balsa wood and acrylic.
On the morning of the presentation, she woke up early to find the model sitting on the kitchen island, perfectly intact, but with a small addition. Sitting right outside the tiny wooden doors of her miniature building were four tiny, painted clay figures—a woman, a tall man, and three little girls.
Lily walked into the kitchen, rubbing her sleepy eyes. "Do you like it, Mommy? Leo helped us paint them so you wouldn't be lonely at your big test."
Tears pricked Mariana’s eyes. She knelt down and pulled Lily into a tight hug. When she looked up, Leo was leaning against the doorframe, a soft smile on his face.

"Just a reminder of who you're building all this for," Leo said.
Mariana went to her presentation with a fierce fire in her chest. She spoke passionately about safe spaces, about community resilience, and about the importance of light in dark places. When she finished, the panel was silent before breaking into genuine applause. She had aced it.
