Chapter 3 - A New Dawn

Morning sunlight spilled across the hardwood floors of the penthouse. Mariana woke up disoriented. The total absence of the Alcazar mansion’s oppressive dread felt foreign, yet profoundly relieving.

She walked into the main living space and found her daughters peacefully watching cartoons on a massive television. On the kitchen island sat a generous spread of fresh fruit, warm pastries, and pancakes.

Leo was at the counter pouring coffee. He wore a simple grey t-shirt, the harsh edges of the ruthless protector from the night before softened by the morning light. He slid a warm mug across the granite counter toward her.

"Eat," he instructed gently.

Mariana wrapped her hands around the warm ceramic. "Why did you do it?" she asked, her voice raspy. "You threw away your most lucrative alliance for us."

Leo took a slow sip of his coffee, his dark eyes meeting hers. "I protect people who need it, Mariana. Beatriz crossed a line she can't uncross. They valued a toxic legacy over innocent lives. You and your girls deserve a future without fear."

Mariana looked over at her daughters, their innocent laughter ringing out in the bright, safe room. The road ahead would require rebuilding her entire life from scratch, but as she looked at Leo, she realized she was no longer walking it alone.
