Chapter 9 - Building Foundations

The dining room table, once the center for Leo’s strategic security planning, had been entirely overtaken by rolls of drafting paper, T-squares, and architectural scales. Mariana spent her evenings hunched over the blueprints, a pencil tucked behind her ear, completely absorbed in her coursework.

She was designing a community center for a final project, pouring all her understanding of flow, light, and safety into the structure. She wanted to build spaces that felt open but secure—a subconscious reflection of what Leo’s penthouse had been for her.

Leo, meanwhile, had taken on the evening routine with the girls. He helped Sofia with her math, patiently explaining fractions using slices of apple, while Maya and Lily practiced reading aloud. Mariana would occasionally pause her drafting, looking up to watch the formidable, heavily tattooed man gently correcting a six-year-old’s pronunciation of a difficult word.

He never tried to replace their biological father, a man they barely remembered, but he filled the void with a steady, unshakeable presence. The girls no longer flinched at loud noises or footsteps; instead, they ran toward the door when they heard Leo’s key in the lock. The foundation of their new family was quietly, solidly being laid.
