Chapter 17 - The Family Tree

Sofia was twelve, navigating the complicated waters of middle school with a fierce independence Leo had taught her and the empathetic grace she inherited from her mother.

One evening, she sat at the kitchen island, staring blankly at a poster board.

"Stuck?" Leo asked, pulling up a stool beside her.

"It’s a family history project," Sofia sighed, tapping her marker against the table. "My teacher said we have to trace our bloodline and write about our legacy. But... I don't want to write about them. The Alcazars. I don't want their name on my project."

Leo’s expression softened. He knew the girls harbored complex feelings about their biological roots, even though they hadn't seen the family in years.

"A legacy isn't just about blood, Sofia," Leo said gently. "It’s about what you choose to build. It's about the people who show up for you, who teach you, and who love you unconditionally."

Sofia looked at Leo, her hazel eyes thoughtful. She picked up a thick green marker and drew a large, sturdy tree trunk. At the roots, instead of writing names, she wrote: Courage, Protection, Love. On the branches, she wrote her name, her sisters' names, Mariana’s name, and right in the center, she wrote Leo.

When Mariana saw the finished poster later that night, she wept, realizing that the toxic cycle had truly been broken.
