Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The grand hall seemed to inhale just before Claire Bennett fell.

One second, she was standing behind the carved marble railing on the second floor of Vale House, her pale polka-dot dress bright beneath the chandelier.

The next, her heel slid backward, her fingers clawed at empty air, and terror broke across her face.

"Adrian!"

Her scream struck the ceiling and shattered every polite conversation below.

Adrian Vale turned from the foot of the winding staircase and saw the woman he loved tip over the balcony.

He did not think.

He ran.

His shoulder clipped a gilded table as he took the first steps two at a time, then abandoned the staircase entirely when he realized she was dropping toward the marble floor faster than he could climb.

He vaulted the inner banister, landed hard, and sprinted beneath the chandelier.

Claire fell through the golden light with her hair whipping around her face.

Adrian threw himself forward and caught her across his arms and chest.

The impact drove him to one knee.

Pain shot through his shoulder, but he locked both arms around her and refused to let her touch the floor.

Claire gasped against him, unable to form a word.

Her hands trembled so violently that they could not close around his shirt.

For one breath, Adrian felt only relief.

Then he looked up.

On the balcony, the maid, Mara Ruiz, stood frozen with both hands over her mouth.

Ten feet away from her, Edmund Vale watched from the upper landing in a dark tailored suit.

Adrian's grandfather did not look shocked.

He looked annoyed.

That small difference turned Adrian's relief into something colder.

"What happened?"

Claire tried to answer, but only a broken breath came out.

Edmund placed one hand on the marble rail.

"She slipped."

Adrian stared at him.

"I asked her."

The room went silent.

Guests who had been laughing over champagne now avoided one another's eyes.

No one moved toward Claire.

No one called for help until Adrian shouted for an ambulance.

Mara finally stepped away from the railing.

Her eyes met Claire's for half a second.

Something passed between them that Adrian could not understand.

Fear was part of it.

Guilt was the rest.

Claire suddenly gripped Adrian's wrist.

"The railing," she whispered.

"What about it?"

Her pupils were huge.

"It moved."

Edmund's expression hardened above them.

"She is confused."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

Adrian looked at the balcony again.

One of the carved stone posts sat at a slight angle.

It was almost invisible beneath the decorative molding.

Almost.

Edmund noticed where Adrian was looking.

"Old houses settle."

Adrian rose carefully with Claire still in his arms.

"Marble does not settle in thirty seconds."

Edmund descended one step.

"Do not turn an accident into a scandal."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"My fiancée almost died in your house."

The word fiancée moved through the room like another shock.

Edmund had forbidden them from announcing the engagement that evening.

Adrian had just announced it anyway.

Claire buried her face against his chest as another tremor ran through her.

Then she whispered words only he could hear.

"I wasn't alone before I fell."

Adrian went still.

"Who was there?"

Claire looked over his shoulder toward the balcony.

Mara had disappeared.

Edmund was still watching.

Claire's voice became smaller.

"Someone touched the rail behind me."

A siren began to rise beyond the mansion gates.

Adrian looked at his grandfather and understood one thing with terrifying clarity.

Whatever had happened above that chandelier was not finished.

It had only missed.
