Chapter 12 - The Balcony Trap.

Edmund believed Graham would return because one piece of evidence was still missing.

The original maintenance bolt from the balcony railing had never been found.

If recovered, tool marks could connect the sabotage to Graham's equipment.

Claire thought the theory sounded thin.

Then Edmund told them something he had withheld.

Vale House contained a maintenance vault beneath the staircase.

Every piece of original marble hardware removed during repair was cataloged and stored there for historical preservation.

Graham knew the system.

If the sabotaged bolt had been collected with the broken railing, it could still be inside the house.

The fire had destroyed the security servers, but not the vault.

Adrian called the detective.

They arranged surveillance around the property.

Then they made the mistake of assuming Graham would enter from outside.

At 11:40 p.m., the chandelier lights flickered.

Claire was standing in the grand hall with Adrian when every door lock clicked simultaneously.

Edmund looked toward the staircase.

"He's already inside."

A speaker hidden in the ceiling came alive.

Graham's voice filled the mansion.

"I always admired this house."

Adrian pulled Claire behind a marble column.

"Where are you?"

Graham laughed.

"Closer than your police friends."

The exterior gates slammed shut, trapping officers outside the inner courtyard.

Graham had taken control of the old house automation system from the maintenance room.

Edmund moved toward the basement door.

A gunshot struck the marble beside his hand.

He fell backward.

Claire screamed.

Graham stepped onto the second-floor balcony holding a pistol.

He looked almost elegant beneath the chandelier.

"There it is."

His gaze fixed on Claire.

"The woman who refuses to fall properly."

Adrian moved in front of her.

Graham pointed the gun at him.

"You ruined a very simple plan."

Claire forced herself to speak.

"You loosened the railing."

"I loosened one bolt."

"You killed my father."

Graham's expression hardened.

"Your father killed himself the moment he believed evidence mattered more than leverage."

Claire's phone was recording in her pocket.

This time, Graham did not care.

He believed no one would leave with it.

Edmund slowly rose behind a column.

"Thomas trusted Evelyn."

Graham looked down at him.

"Thomas trusted everyone."

Edmund's voice shook.

"I should have turned you in fifteen years ago."

"Yes."

Graham smiled.

"But then the world would have learned what your precious daughter signed."

Adrian stared at his grandfather.

Edmund finally said the words he had avoided his entire life.

"I chose the family name over an innocent man's life."

The confession echoed through the hall.

Graham raised the pistol toward Edmund.

Claire saw his attention shift.

She ran for the staircase.

"Claire!"

Adrian chased her.

She climbed toward the balcony because she understood what Graham wanted.

He wanted the maintenance vault.

The vault key was hidden inside the loose decorative cap beside the railing, a fact Edmund had mentioned only minutes earlier.

Graham moved toward it.

Claire reached the balcony first.

She pulled the brass key from the cap and held it over the open hall.

"Looking for this?"

Graham aimed the gun at her.

She stood inches from the place where she had fallen.

Her knees trembled.

She refused to move.

"Put it down."

"You mean drop it?"

Claire held the key beyond the railing.

Graham took one step closer.

Adrian appeared at the top of the stairs.

Graham spun toward him.

Claire threw the key over the balcony.

Graham instinctively lunged for it.

His hand struck the repaired railing.

Adrian tackled him from the side.

The pistol skidded across the marble.

For one terrifying moment, Graham's body tipped over the edge.

Adrian caught his wrist.

Graham dangled above the hall exactly where Claire had fallen.

He looked up at Adrian in disbelief.

"Let me go."

Adrian's face was cold.

"No."

Then he pulled the man who had tried to murder Claire back to safety.

"You don't get to turn me into you."

Police breached the gates seconds later.
