Chapter 6 - The Price of Staying.

The photograph of Mara changed the rules.

Until then, Claire had been willing to believe the Vale family was hiding financial crimes and an attempted murder.

Now someone was using a frightened young woman as leverage.

Adrian wanted to turn everything over to federal investigators immediately.

Claire agreed, but she also knew they needed evidence that could not disappear in a convenient fire.

The next morning, Graham Holt requested a private meeting with her.

Adrian refused on her behalf.

Claire accepted.

They met in the winter garden at Vale House, where glass walls overlooked acres of manicured grounds.

Graham arrived with no folder this time.

That made him more dangerous.

"You have courage," he told her.

"People usually say that when they want me to do something stupid."

He smiled.

"Leave Adrian."

Claire stared at him.

Graham placed a cashier's check on the table.

Ten million dollars.

"This is not from Edmund."

"Then who is it from?"

"Someone who prefers peace."

"Peace for whom?"

Graham leaned back.

"Your father was not murdered because he was innocent."

Claire felt heat rise beneath her bruises.

"Careful."

"Thomas Bennett stole from the Vales, concealed the theft, and threatened to expose everyone when he realized he could not escape the consequences."

"Show me proof."

"I am offering you enough money to never need proof."

Claire pushed the check back.

"Then you don't have any."

For the first time, Graham's smile vanished.

"Your father made the same mistake."

The words landed between them.

Claire did not move.

"What mistake?"

Graham realized he had said too much.

"Believing that truth protects the person holding it."

Claire's phone was recording inside her purse.

She kept her expression neutral.

"Did you kill him?"

Graham stood.

"No."

"Did Edmund?"

"You are asking the wrong question."

"What is the right one?"

He looked toward the mansion.

"Who benefited?"

Then he walked away.

Adrian listened to the recording twice.

"He wanted you to think Grandfather killed your dad."

"Maybe he did."

"Or Graham is protecting himself."

Claire rubbed her temples.

Every answer seemed designed to produce another suspect.

That afternoon, an envelope arrived at Adrian's apartment with no return address.

Inside was a photocopy of an old Vale Holdings board resolution.

It transferred control of several construction subsidiaries to Edmund fifteen years earlier.

Thomas Bennett's signature appeared at the bottom as financial witness.

So did Evelyn Vale's.

Adrian stared at his mother's name.

"She knew your father."

Claire had never heard that before.

A handwritten note appeared in the margin beside Evelyn's signature.

If Thomas refuses, use the house account.

The initials beside the sentence were E.V.

Edmund Vale.

Or Evelyn Vale.

Claire suddenly understood why someone wanted Adrian divided from her.

The evidence did not merely accuse his family.

It accused his dead mother.

That night, Adrian received an email from an account belonging to Evelyn that had been inactive for eight years.

There was no message.
