Chapter 11 - A Son Turned Witness.

The handcuffs closed around Adrian's wrists before Claire understood what Graham had done.
Mara was standing ten feet away.
She had entered behind the officers with her eyes lowered and a bruise darkening one cheek.
Claire stared at her.
"Tell them the truth."
Mara flinched.
Graham placed a protective hand near her shoulder without touching her.
"She already did."
The police report claimed Adrian had abducted Mara from her apartment, held her inside Vale House, and assaulted her when she tried to escape.
It was absurd.
It was also supported by security footage.
Graham showed Claire a video from a hallway camera.
Adrian appeared to drag Mara through a doorway.
The timestamp was from the previous night.
Claire recognized the clothes he had been wearing.
She also recognized the angle.
It was the west wing corridor just before Adrian freed Mara from the radiator.
The video had been cut to remove the rope around her wrists.
"You edited it."
Graham looked offended.
"You are becoming predictable."
Adrian said nothing as the officers led him away.
He looked at Mara once.
She began to cry.
At the station, Graham produced medical photographs of the bruise on her face.
Mara signed a statement saying Adrian caused it.
Claire could barely contain her rage.
"Why are you doing this?"
Mara whispered without looking up.
"I'm sorry."
That apology saved Adrian.
It was too quiet for Graham to hear, but Claire heard it clearly.
Mara was still being controlled.
Claire asked the detective for five minutes alone with her.
Graham objected.
Claire objected louder.
Edmund arrived with three attorneys and, for once, used his influence on the right side.
The detective allowed the meeting.
Mara entered the interview room shaking.
Claire did not accuse her.
She asked one question.
"Who are they threatening?"
Mara broke instantly.
"My little sister."
Graham had arranged for sixteen-year-old Sofia Ruiz to be picked up outside school.
He sent Mara a photograph of Sofia sitting in the back seat of a car.
Then he dictated every sentence of the false statement.
Claire's anger became sharp enough to focus her.
"Where is Sofia now?"
"I don't know."
Mara reached into her sleeve and removed a tiny memory card.
"But I stole this from Graham."
Before escaping the west wing, Mara had grabbed the card from a phone Graham left on a table.
She had hidden it even after he found her again.
Claire took the card directly to the detective.
It contained dozens of audio files.
Most were recordings Graham had made of Edmund, executives, politicians, and employees.
He had collected blackmail for years.
One file was dated the night Claire fell.
Graham's voice spoke first.
"She found the letter from Evelyn."
A second voice answered.
It was Edmund.
"Then take it from her."
"And if she refuses?"
"Scare her."
Graham laughed softly.
"Like Bennett?"
Edmund's response was immediate.
"No."
Then, after a long pause, he said something worse.
"Do not make me clean up another body."
Claire closed her eyes.
Edmund had not ordered her murder.
But he had unleashed the same man who killed her father and expected restraint.
The final seconds of the recording contained Graham speaking after Edmund left.
"Some lessons only work once."
Then came the sound of a metal tool striking stone.
The police released Adrian within the hour.
Graham disappeared before they could arrest him.
Mara's sister was found unharmed at a motel near the airport.
The person guarding her fled through a rear exit.
At dawn, Adrian returned to Vale House and found his grandfather alone beneath the chandelier.
Edmund looked at him and said, "I know where Graham will go."
Adrian did not answer.
May you like
Edmund looked up at the balcony.
"He will come back to finish what he started."
