Chapter 9 - The Lie in the Marble.

Adrian stopped the tape.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Claire could see grief moving through him like a physical injury.

He had spent eight years defending the memory of his mother.

Now her own voice had admitted complicity.

He pressed play again.

Evelyn sounded younger, frightened, and furious with herself.

She explained that Edmund had created false construction projects during a financial crisis to move company money into private reserves.

He told Evelyn the transfers were temporary.

She signed because she believed the company would collapse without them.

Graham Holt designed the shell companies.

Then the crisis ended.

The money did not return.

Graham began siphoning funds for himself and using the original fraud to blackmail Edmund and Evelyn.

Thomas Bennett discovered the missing millions while auditing one of the subsidiaries.

He refused a payoff.

Evelyn began helping him collect evidence.

"I thought I could fix what I signed," her voice said on the tape.

"Instead, I gave Graham the weapon he needed to control all of us."

Thomas asked whether Edmund knew Graham was stealing.

Evelyn answered yes.

"Father knows, but he is more afraid of public disgrace than he is of Graham."

Claire felt sick.

Her father had died because a powerful family preferred reputation to justice.

The recording continued.

Thomas said he had hidden the original ledger inside Vale House.

He planned to deliver copies to prosecutors the next morning.

He never arrived.

Adrian turned off the recorder.

Mara wiped tears from her face.

"Mr. Edmund knew what Graham did to your father."

Claire looked at her.

"How do you know?"

"I heard them arguing years ago."

Mara had started working at Vale House when she was eighteen.

One night, she carried coffee to Edmund's study and heard Graham say Thomas should have accepted the road they gave him.

Edmund replied that killing Thomas had never been part of the agreement.

Claire's stomach turned.

"What agreement?"

Mara shook her head.

"I never heard the rest."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Grandfather hired Graham to scare Thomas."

"And Graham killed him instead," Claire said.

A quiet clap came from the passage entrance.

Graham Holt stood there with the handgun lowered at his side.

"Very good."

Mara screamed.

Adrian stepped in front of both women.

Graham looked tired rather than frightened.

"You have spent two days reconstructing fifteen years of mistakes."

Claire held her phone behind her back and started recording.

"Did you sabotage the balcony?"

Graham smiled.

"Claire, that railing had been loose for years."

"That's a lie."

"Most useful statements are."

Adrian moved toward him.

Graham raised the gun.

"Your grandfather will blame me for everything now."

"Maybe because you did it."

"No."

Graham's voice sharpened.

"Because Edmund Vale has survived his entire life by making other people dirtier than he is."

He tossed something onto the floor.

A silver signet ring spun across the marble and stopped near Claire's shoe.

"That belongs to him."

Adrian stared at it.

Graham continued.

"Ask your grandfather why his ring was found beside the loosened balcony bolt."

Then he backed into the passage.

Adrian lunged after him, but a steel fire door slammed between them.

By the time they reached the other side, Graham was gone.

Claire picked up the ring with a handkerchief.

Inside the band, beneath the Vale crest, were two engraved initials.
