Chapter 14 - The House Chooses Its Heir.

The scandal broke three days later.
Vale Holdings stock collapsed before trading was suspended.
Reporters surrounded the mansion gates.
Federal agents carried boxes from offices that had once seemed untouchable.
Edmund Vale surrendered without requesting special treatment.
Graham Holt was charged with Thomas Bennett's murder, Claire's attempted murder, kidnapping, extortion, fraud, and multiple counts related to blackmail and evidence destruction.
His attorneys insisted the recordings had been manipulated.
Then prosecutors found the original crash report from Thomas's death inside Graham's private archive.
A handwritten instruction on the first page ordered investigators to remove photographs of damaged brake lines.
The initials beside the instruction were G.H.
Claire read the report in a federal interview room.
She cried for the first time since her fall.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
She simply lowered her face into her hands and mourned the father she had been taught to blame for driving too fast.
Adrian sat beside her without speaking.
The truth did not bring Thomas back.
It did return his name.
A week later, another problem appeared.
Vale House itself was not legally owned by Edmund.
The original deed, found in a courthouse archive, showed that half the estate had been purchased through a trust established by Thomas Bennett's grandfather decades earlier.
During a corporate restructuring, the Bennett family's interest had been buried beneath fraudulent transfers.
Thomas had discovered that too.
Claire was the surviving beneficiary.
She legally owned forty-nine percent of Vale House.
Adrian owned the remaining fifty-one percent through Evelyn's estate.
When the family attorney explained this, Claire laughed for nearly a minute.
"So the house tried to kill one of its owners."
Adrian smiled for the first time in days.
"Technically, Graham tried."
"The house has terrible taste in lawyers."
They stood together in the grand hall while workers removed damaged marble from the balcony.
Mara entered carrying two cups of coffee.
She had refused every offer of money from the family.
Instead, Claire helped her enroll in nursing school and arranged counseling for her and Sofia.
Mara looked toward the balcony and shuddered.
"I still hear the scream."
Claire did too.
Adrian reached for her hand.
"We can sell the house."
Claire looked around at the chandeliers, portraits, columns, and polished surfaces built to impress people into silence.
"No."
Adrian was surprised.
"You want to keep it?"
"I want to change what it is."
They decided to convert the west wing into a public foundation for whistleblowers and families harmed by corporate retaliation.
The hidden passages would be preserved as part of the history.
Evelyn's tapes would be archived.
Thomas's blue ledger would be displayed behind protective glass after the criminal trials ended.
Nothing would be hidden behind portraits again.
That evening, Claire climbed the repaired staircase alone.
Adrian watched from below but did not follow.
She reached the balcony.
Her breathing changed.
Her hands became cold.
She placed both palms on the new railing.
It did not move.
For several seconds, she could not look down.
Then she forced herself to open her eyes.
Adrian stood beneath the chandelier in the exact place where he had caught her.
He did not tell her to be brave.
He did not tell her she was safe.
He simply waited.
Claire smiled faintly.
Then a worker approached Adrian carrying a small metal box found inside the wall near the original railing.
"Mr. Vale, you should see this."
Adrian opened it.
Inside was a second memory card.
May you like
A label on the front contained only one date.
The night Thomas Bennett died.
