Chapter 10 - The Boardroom Trap.

Claire stared at the silver security key in Margaret’s palm.

She had last seen it six months earlier in the locked drawer of her home office.

Adrian stepped toward his mother.

“How long have you had that?”

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“Long enough.”

The fear vanished from her face so completely that Claire finally understood her father’s warning.

Margaret had been frightened at times.

But she had also learned how useful fear could look.

Noah reached for the device.

Margaret closed her fist around it.

“Don’t touch me.”

Claire stood.

“You used my certificate to queue the transfer.”

Margaret did not deny it.

Adrian looked stunned.

“You said the plan was to secure temporary control.”

Margaret laughed quietly.

“That was your plan.”

“My plan was to make sure Bennett never had the power to humiliate me again.”

Adrian stepped back as if she had struck him with the words.

Claire’s voice remained calm.

“You used your own son to get close to me.”

Margaret’s eyes flicked toward her.

“I encouraged an introduction.”

“What happened after that was real enough.”

Claire looked at Adrian.

He could not meet her eyes.

That answer hurt more than Claire expected.

Their marriage had not been entirely false.

That somehow made the betrayal worse.

Noah checked his phone.

“The emergency trustee has been notified.”

“The midnight transfer can be stopped.”

Margaret smiled.

“Can it?”

Rachel opened the gray box again.

A second folder lay beneath the voting agreement.

She pulled it free and frowned.

Inside was a notice for an emergency board meeting scheduled for 8:00 the next morning.

The agenda listed one item.

Removal of Claire Bennett for cause.

Adrian stared at it.

“I didn’t schedule this.”

Margaret looked at him almost kindly.

“You were never supposed to chair the committee.”

“You were supposed to make Claire look unstable enough for the board to panic.”

Claire felt anger rise, but she kept it controlled.

“The staircase.”

Margaret said nothing.

Claire continued.

“You wanted him to provoke me.”

Adrian’s face changed.

He remembered the morning differently now too.

Margaret had been standing near the piano before Claire came downstairs.

She had told Adrian that Claire planned to “take company records and disappear.”

She had pushed every word that made him more controlling.

Adrian looked sick.

“You knew there were cameras in the foyer.”

Margaret’s silence answered him.

The footage could make Claire’s defensive kick look reckless if the seconds before it were removed.

Claire finally saw the entire shape of the plan.

Margaret wanted the board to see a frightened husband, a volatile executive, a sudden departure, and a forged resignation ready to “solve” the crisis.

It was crude in pieces.

Together, it was devastating.

Noah stood.

“Tomorrow morning, we go to the board with the full record.”

Margaret shook her head.

“You won’t have the full record.”

She opened her handbag and dropped the silver token onto the table.

Then she removed a memory card no larger than a fingernail.

“The foyer footage is here.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

Margaret snapped the card between her fingers.

A tiny crack sounded.

She let the pieces fall beside the dinner plate.

Adrian stared at her in horror.

Claire did not move.

Rachel quietly reached into her pocket.

She placed another memory card on the table.

“I made a copy at 6:03 this morning.”

Margaret’s face changed for the first time all night.

May you like

Rachel met her eyes.

“You taught me never to trust the only copy.”
