Chapter 6 - The Empty Office.

Rachel stepped inside and quietly closed the office door behind her.
Noah moved between her and Claire.
Rachel raised both hands.
“I’m not here to threaten anyone.”
Claire kept the forged resignation letter in front of her.
“Then explain why you printed this.”
Rachel looked at the page.
“Because I was told to.”
“By Adrian?”
Rachel gave a tired laugh.
“That would be simpler.”
Claire felt her patience thinning.
“Stop speaking in riddles.”
Rachel crossed to the window.
Below them, traffic moved in bright lines through the city.
“Your father built Bennett Group with two protections.”
“One was the family trust.”
“The other was a voting agreement that activates if anyone tries to seize control through fraud.”
Noah’s expression changed.
“I’ve never seen that agreement.”
“You weren’t supposed to unless the trigger occurred.”
Rachel turned back toward Claire.
“I found it two years ago during an archive review.”
“And you told Adrian?”
“No.”
Rachel’s eyes hardened.
“I told Margaret.”
Claire stared at her.
The office suddenly felt too quiet.
Margaret had arrived at the law firm acting frightened and helpful.
Her father’s note had warned Claire not to trust Margaret’s fear.
Claire heard the sentence again in her head.
Do not trust Margaret’s fear.
Rachel opened a drawer in Claire’s desk.
Inside was a key Claire had never seen.
Small.
Brass.
Stamped with the number 17.
“Your father gave me instructions before he died.”
“If pressure was ever placed on you to surrender the company, I was to make sure this reached you.”
Claire did not take the key.
“You forged my signature fifteen times.”
Rachel flinched.
“I prepared drafts.”
“Adrian applied the signatures.”
“That does not make you innocent.”
“I know.”
Rachel’s voice dropped.
“I thought I could stay close enough to understand what he wanted.”
“Then I realized Margaret wanted more.”
Claire looked toward Noah.
He remained silent, letting Rachel continue.
Rachel pointed to the blue folder.
“Adrian thinks he’s building a path to temporary control.”
“Margaret is building a path to permanent control.”
Claire felt something cold move through her chest.
“Of my company?”
“Of the trust.”
Rachel nodded toward the key.
“Locker seventeen is in the basement archive.”
“Your father put the original voting agreement there.”
“And Margaret has been trying to find it for years.”
Claire finally took the key.
Before anyone could speak again, the fire alarm sounded.
One sharp tone became another.
Red lights began flashing in the hall.
A voice over the speaker ordered everyone to evacuate.
Noah looked toward the door.
“Could be real.”
Rachel shook her head immediately.
“It isn’t.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Adrian used the same trick during an audit last year.”
Claire moved toward the hallway.
“If they want the building empty, they want something inside it.”
They took the stairs down instead of the elevators.
On the basement level, the archive corridor was already dark.
Someone had shut off the lights.
Claire used her phone flashlight.
Locker seventeen stood at the end of the hall.
The brass key fit.
Claire turned it.
The door opened.
The locker was empty.
Except for one white envelope taped to the back wall.
Claire pulled it free.
Her name was written across it.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed her father standing beside Margaret twelve years earlier.
On the back, her father had written one sentence.
If Margaret ever says she met me only after your wedding, she is lying.
Claire looked up at Rachel.
“How long did my father know her?”
May you like
Rachel’s face went pale.
“Long before Adrian ever met you.”
