Chapter 7 - Margaret's Second Phone.

The photograph changed everything Claire thought she understood about her marriage.

Adrian had always claimed his mother first met Claire’s father at the engagement dinner.

Margaret had repeated the same story for years.

Yet the photograph was dated twelve years before Claire’s wedding.

Noah enlarged the image on his phone.

Behind Claire’s father and Margaret stood the old Bennett warehouse, long before it became the company archive.

Rachel recognized the location immediately.

“Margaret worked there.”

Claire turned toward her.

“What?”

“Not directly for Bennett.”

“She was employed by a records contractor.”

“Your father fired that contractor after financial files went missing.”

Claire felt another piece lock into place.

Margaret had not entered Claire’s life through Adrian.

Adrian may have entered Claire’s life through Margaret.

The fire alarm stopped abruptly.

The basement lights returned.

No smoke.

No emergency staff.

Only silence.

Noah checked the hall camera.

The indicator light was dark.

“Someone disabled surveillance down here.”

Rachel looked at Claire.

“We need to leave.”

They exited through the loading bay and drove separately to Noah’s firm.

On the way, Claire called the inn.

The desk clerk answered nervously.

“Ms. Bennett, someone came asking for you.”

“Who?”

“A man in a navy suit.”

Claire knew without asking.

“Did he enter my room?”

“No.”

“But after he left, we found your door unlocked.”

Claire ended the call.

Her suitcase was still at the inn.

So was the blue folder.

Noah turned his car around before she finished explaining.

They arrived twenty minutes later.

The room looked untouched.

The suitcase remained beside the bed.

Claire opened it.

The clothes were folded exactly as she had left them.

The blue folder was gone.

In its place lay Margaret’s cheap black phone.

Claire stared at it.

“That phone was with us at the office.”

Rachel shook her head.

“No.”

“You put it in your purse after the conference room.”

Claire checked her purse.

The phone was not there.

Someone had taken it from her without her noticing.

Noah picked up the replacement device with a tissue.

“This may not be the same phone.”

Claire pressed the side button.

The screen lit immediately.

There was one new voice recording.

Timestamp: 5:41 p.m.

Claire played it.

Margaret’s voice filled the room.

“Claire, if you hear this, do not come to dinner tonight.”

A pause.

Then a door slammed somewhere in the recording.

Margaret continued, quieter now.

“Adrian found out I spoke to you.”

“He thinks I betrayed him.”

Another voice spoke in the background.

Claire recognized Adrian.

“Who are you talking to?”

The recording ended.

Rachel looked at the clock.

6:12 p.m.

The Monarch Club meeting began in seventy-eight minutes.

Noah told Claire to stay away.

Rachel agreed.

Claire listened to the recording again.

The first time, she heard fear.

The second time, she heard something else.

A faint chime sounded behind Margaret’s voice.

Three notes.

Claire had heard it thousands of times.

The antique grandfather clock in the mansion foyer.

Margaret had not recorded the warning somewhere private.

She had recorded it directly beneath the chandelier.

In the same foyer where Claire had walked out that morning.

Claire stood.

“She wanted me to recognize the house.”

Noah frowned.

“Why?”

“Because she wanted me to come back.”

Rachel whispered, “Or because she wanted Adrian to think you would.”

Claire looked at the empty space where the blue folder had been.

Then the replacement phone buzzed.

A calendar invitation appeared.
