Chapter 8 - The Dinner Invitation.

Claire arrived at the Monarch Club at 7:27 p.m.
She did not wear the blue silk dress.
She wore a simple black suit, flat shoes, and her father’s old silver watch.
Noah sat two tables away in the main dining room.
Maya waited in a nearby office with access to the company’s financial systems.
Rachel was nowhere to be seen.
The private dining room held four place settings.
Adrian sat at the head of the table.
Margaret sat to his right.
The fourth chair was empty.
Adrian stood when Claire entered.
For one fraction of a second, relief crossed his face.
Then the old confidence returned.
“I knew you’d come.”
Claire remained near the door.
“You invited me?”
Adrian looked at his mother.
Margaret said nothing.
The older woman’s hands were folded too tightly in her lap.
Claire noticed a small red mark where her wedding ring usually sat.
The ring was gone.
Adrian gestured toward the empty chair.
“Sit down.”
Claire stayed standing.
“Where’s Rachel?”
Adrian’s mouth tightened.
“She’s dealing with the mess you created at the office.”
Claire almost laughed.
“My office?”
“Our office,” Adrian corrected.
The words landed exactly as he intended.
Claire pulled out the chair but did not sit.
“You wanted to talk.”
“So talk.”
Adrian leaned back.
“I’m willing to forget what happened this morning.”
“You mean when you grabbed me?”
“I mean when you embarrassed yourself.”
Margaret looked down.
Claire did not react.
Adrian continued.
“You’re under stress.”
“You haven’t been sleeping.”
“You walked out with confidential documents.”
“You forced your way into company offices after your access was suspended.”
Claire understood immediately.
He was rehearsing the story he planned to tell the board.
Each sentence was a brick in the wall around her.
Then he slid a document across the table.
It was the forged resignation letter.
“Sign the real one,” he said.
Claire looked at the page.
“And if I don’t?”
Adrian smiled.
“Then tomorrow the board receives the version you already signed.”
Margaret finally spoke.
“Adrian, enough.”
He turned on her.
“You wanted her here.”
“Now let me finish.”
Claire watched Margaret closely.
Do not trust Margaret’s fear.
The warning from her father returned again.
Margaret looked terrified.
But terror could be real and still be useful.
Claire reached into her purse and removed the small brass key marked 17.
Margaret’s eyes widened.
Adrian’s did not.
Interesting.
Claire placed the key on the table.
“You know what this opens?”
Adrian looked annoyed.
“No.”
Margaret whispered, “Claire, put that away.”
Claire turned toward her.
“So you do.”
Adrian looked between them.
“What is it?”
Margaret did not answer.
Claire leaned closer.
“My father left something in the archive.”
Adrian’s confidence cracked.
“What?”
“I don’t know yet.”
“That locker was empty.”
Margaret exhaled.
Adrian snapped his gaze toward her.
“How do you know the locker was empty?”
Margaret froze.
Claire finally understood why the meeting felt wrong.
Adrian was not the only person at the table being tested.
Margaret had invited Claire because she needed Adrian to reveal what he knew.
Adrian had invited Claire because he needed the resignation signed.
And Claire had come because she needed them to turn on each other.
The fourth place setting suddenly made sense.
The door opened.
Rachel walked in carrying a gray document box.
She set it on the table.
“I found what was removed from locker seventeen.”
Margaret stood so fast her chair struck the wall.
Adrian went completely still.
Rachel opened the box.
May you like
Inside was the original voting agreement.
And beneath it was a sealed envelope addressed to Margaret Cole.
