Chapter 5 - The Signature That Wasn't Hers.

By late afternoon, Noah’s forensic accountant had found eighteen documents carrying Claire’s signature.
Claire had personally signed only three of them.
The remaining fifteen were copies, traced versions, or digital imitations layered onto scanned pages.
The pattern was not random.
Every questionable document shifted authority away from Claire and toward Adrian.
One expanded his access to company accounts.
One placed him on a dormant advisory committee.
Another permitted Rachel to act for Claire during undefined “periods of absence.”
The most troubling document was dated two weeks in the future.
Claire stared at the date.
“How can a signed document exist before the day it was supposedly signed?”
The accountant, Maya Torres, turned her laptop around.
“Because they planned to use it after tonight.”
The document was a resignation letter.
According to the letter, Claire intended to step down as chief executive of Bennett Architectural Group for personal reasons.
Rachel would become interim CEO.
Adrian would chair a newly created strategic committee.
Claire read the final paragraph twice.
It thanked Adrian for his “steady guidance during a difficult private transition.”
Her stomach turned.
“They were going to remove me and make it sound voluntary.”
Maya nodded.
“And if the board accepted this while believing the signature was genuine, reversing it would be complicated.”
Noah pointed to the timestamp embedded in the file.
“It was created on a computer inside your company headquarters.”
Claire knew what that meant.
Rachel had not been assisting Adrian from the outside.
She had been operating from Claire’s own office.
The black phone buzzed.
A new message from Adrian appeared.
Everything under control?
Margaret replied a minute later.
She saw the company name.
Adrian responded immediately.
Then we accelerate.
Claire read the words aloud.
Noah checked the time.
“It’s 4:32.”
“The Monarch Club meeting is three hours away.”
Claire stood.
“I’m going to the office.”
Noah objected at once.
“That is exactly where they may expect you.”
“They expect me to hide.”
Claire picked up her purse.
“That is why I’m going.”
The Bennett headquarters occupied six floors of a glass tower downtown.
When Claire arrived, her executive access card failed at the lobby gate.
She tried again.
Red light.
The security guard looked uncomfortable.
“Ms. Bennett, I was told your access had been temporarily suspended.”
“By whom?”
He glanced at the monitor.
“Ms. Rachel Pike.”
Claire smiled without warmth.
“Call her.”
The guard did.
Rachel did not answer.
Claire took out her phone and called the company’s outside security contractor.
Her father had negotiated the contract himself.
Nine minutes later, Claire was escorted upstairs by the building’s regional supervisor.
The executive floor was nearly empty.
Her office door was locked.
Claire used the master override.
Inside, nothing looked disturbed.
That made it worse.
Her desk had been polished.
Her papers were aligned.
Even the framed photograph of her father was angled exactly as she always kept it.
Then Maya pointed toward the credenza.
“Claire.”
A small printer sat beneath it.
One sheet of paper remained in the output tray.
Claire pulled it free.
It was the first page of the forged resignation letter.
Someone had printed it less than twenty minutes earlier.
Footsteps sounded in the hall.
Rachel appeared in the doorway.
She stopped when she saw Claire.
Neither woman spoke for several seconds.
Finally, Rachel smiled.
“You should be resting.”
Claire held up the paper.
“And you should be better at lying.”
Rachel’s smile vanished.
May you like
Then she said something Claire had not expected.
“You still think this is Adrian’s plan.”
