Chapter 3 - The Name Behind the Gate.

At 11:58 a.m., Claire and Noah sat in a borrowed conference room at his firm.
The blue folder lay open between them.
Noah had already confirmed that three of the signatures inside were suspicious.
He had also confirmed something Claire did not want to believe.
The consulting company tied to Margaret had received six separate payments from Bennett Architectural Group.
Each payment had been approved under Claire’s name.
Each approval had occurred on a day Adrian claimed Claire was too exhausted to attend the office.
Claire remembered those days clearly now.
Adrian had brought her tea.
He had insisted she rest.
He had taken her phone downstairs so “clients would stop bothering her.”
At noon exactly, Noah refreshed a county property database.
The mansion appeared on the screen.
Claire expected Adrian’s name.
Instead, the owner was Bennett Family Trust.
Her father’s trust.
Claire leaned closer.
“That can’t be right.”
Noah opened the deed history.
Four years earlier, shortly before Claire’s father died, the mansion had been purchased through the trust.
One year later, Adrian had told Claire he had refinanced it in his own name.
No refinancing had occurred.
No transfer had occurred.
Adrian had been acting like the owner of a house he did not legally own.
Claire felt an unfamiliar calm settle over her.
“So when he told me I could be thrown out…”
“He was bluffing,” Noah said.
“No.”
Claire shook her head.
“He believed it.”
Noah looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
“Adrian never bluffs when it comes to money.”
“If he thought the house was his, someone told him it was.”
The conference room door opened.
A receptionist stepped in with a strained expression.
“Mr. Grant, there’s a woman downstairs asking for Ms. Bennett.”
Claire’s shoulders stiffened.
“Who?”
“She says her name is Margaret Cole.”
Noah and Claire exchanged a look.
Two minutes later, Margaret entered carrying a large tan handbag.
She looked nothing like the polished woman from the foyer.
Her lipstick was gone.
Her hair was untidy.
She closed the door behind herself.
“Adrian thinks I’m at the doctor.”
Claire did not invite her to sit.
“What do you want?”
Margaret’s eyes moved to the blue folder.
“I want to know which version you found.”
Claire stared at her.
“Which version?”
Margaret opened her handbag and removed another blue folder.
She placed it beside Claire’s.
The covers were identical.
Noah opened the second folder.
The first page appeared to authorize the exact same transfer.
But the amount was different.
The signature was different.
The destination company was different.
Claire felt cold.
Margaret whispered, “There are at least four.”
“Adrian keeps changing them.”
Noah turned sharply toward her.
“You knew he was falsifying records?”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“I knew he was building something.”
“I didn’t know he was using Claire’s company until three months ago.”
Claire’s voice stayed quiet.
“Your name is on one of the companies receiving money.”
Margaret’s eyes filled with panic.
“I know.”
“That is why I came.”
She reached into the handbag again.
This time she pulled out a cheap black phone.
“I found this in Adrian’s study yesterday.”
“There are messages on it between Adrian and someone at Bennett.”
Claire took the phone.
The newest message had been sent that morning at 8:13.
She opened it.
The sender was saved under one letter.
R.
The message contained only nine words.
She left with the wrong folder.
We still have tonight.
Claire looked at Noah.
“Who is R?”
Margaret answered before he could.
“Your chief financial officer.”
Claire’s face went still.
“Rachel?”
Margaret nodded.
Then the black phone began to ring in Claire’s hand.
May you like
The caller ID showed one name.
Adrian.
