Chapter 1: The Kitchen Floor
The sprawling, modern kitchen was cloaked in the quiet stillness of the evening. Dim ambient lighting cast long shadows across the dark gray cabinetry and polished dark tile floors. At the center of the vast room sat a massive kitchen island, its marble surface gleaming faintly.
Arthur, dressed sharply in a navy blue suit with his white collar partially unbuttoned, walked into the kitchen to grab a glass of water before the evening’s charity gala. He stopped dead in his tracks.
Huddled on the cold tiles next to an empty metal dog bowl was his seven-year-old daughter, Lily. She was wearing her pristine white dress, her knees pulled to her chest, hiding her freckled face in her hands. She was trembling, her quiet sobs echoing in the expansive room.
Arthur’s heart dropped. He rushed forward, his polished shoes clicking sharply against the floor.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, his voice laced with heavy concern.
He crouched down, bringing himself to her eye level. Lily looked up, her blue eyes red and brimming with tears that streamed down her cheeks. Gently, Arthur reached out and took both of her small, trembling hands into his own, trying to ground her.
"Mom told me to stay hidden and never go outside," Lily whispered, her voice cracking.
Arthur’s brow furrowed in deep confusion. He held her hands a little tighter, offering a reassuring warmth.
"Mom said it's a secret," Lily continued, a fresh wave of tears falling. "Mom said I mustn't tell you anything."
Arthur’s expression softened into one of serious, attentive empathy. "You can tell me," he murmured gently.

Before Arthur could ask another question, the kitchen doorway filled with light. Eleanor, Lily’s mother, stood there. She was breathtaking in a sparkly, sleeveless gold evening gown, but her face was pale. Her eyes were wide with sudden shock and panic as she realized Arthur had found their daughter.
